How are breaking down shifts rp wise time and name wise? I'm guessing alpha shift is prime time aka what we rp. I want to mention some other shifts in some stories but I don't know if we have a established cannon for that particularly on pilly. I'm guessing 4 shifts probably. With 3 working per day and one being able to be on a off day at any given time. Or am I overthinking it?
Example Alpha 1400-2200 Gama 2200-0600 Beta 0600-1400 Epsilon Rotating shift that fills in for other ones intermitedly?

I actually made a post supporting a three shift system, but now that I broke down the numbers I think a four shift system would make sense. I like the idea of each officer working two shifts and getting two shifts off.
Here's my idea of how it would work (not authoritative)
Alpha Shift (7am - 1pm) -----------------------
CO: Capt. Dalun XO: Lt. Cmdr. Asada Helm: Lt. Cameron Ops: Lt. Walker (or that other one, whatever her name is) Sec: Ens. Seb Tac: Lt. Brand Sci: Ens. Den Eng: Cmdr. Arnimane
[Alpha Shift lunch break 1:00 - 1:30]
Beta Shift (1:30pm - 7pm) -----------------------
CO: Capt. Dalun XO: Lt. Cmdr. Asada Helm: Lt. Cameron Ops: Lt. Walker (or that other one, whatever her name is) Sec: Ens. Seb Tac: Lt. Brand Sci: Ens. Den Eng: Cmdr. Arnimane
Gamma Shift (7pm - 1am) -----------------------
Usually, no dinner break is needed because Gamma Shift is completely fresh.
The main crew is off duty but Asada or Cameron has the option to command the ship for this shift.
Delta Shift (1am - 7am) -----------------------
The main crew is off duty but Asada or Cameron has the option to command the ship for this shift.
-----------
A three shift system could work too but you would have the main cast eating breakfast around 6:30, lunch around 3, and dinner at 11, which would be brutal.

Another idea is simply having a two shift rotation. Two 12 hour shifts. Which would be something they might have on a small ship with a small crew (like the Sentinel.) Generally speaking the number of shifts sort of depends on how many people it takes to man the ship at any given time. If there is barely enough people on board to run the ship in the first place there wouldn't be an option to divide into shifts.
also the ship's alert status would likely effect duty schedules.
Plus Koss, since Tibs is XO it would likely be his job to set duty schedules for the crew, so ICly speaking it is what Tibs says it is, unless Kitty over rules. Although, unless there is a pressing reason to set a schedule, we may want to leave it a vague as possible so as to not paint us into a corner RP wise.

Ops: Lt. Walker (or that other one, whatever her name is) Ops: Lt. Walker (or that other one, whatever her name is) I admire your dedication to this gimmick

Perhaps the first officer may be in charge of the scheduling of "command" staff, but I image the actual department heads handle the day to day scheduling for each major department and the larger the ship compliment there would be additional delegation filtering down to section officers, like on Adagio.
For example, it only makes sense for Shantal to make the schedule for her engineering team as she works directly with them, knows their strengths and she knows the Sentinel systems very well. Even she delegates sub department scheduling to Odd Job for the main engineering team and Sadcat for the DCT team and retains general deck operations crew (like Stoggins) for herself. You see her also task engineering and operation personnel with assignments or even temporarily shift their sub department, like last week she took Harry and Leb out of main engineering and assigned them to Sadcat and the DCT team to help with manual control.

Yes, that would be most logical that department heads would handle such management issues in their respective departments. That is what the "Administration" skill is for.

According to Memory Alpha, the XO's job is to serve as the principle advisor to the captain, to implement the captain's orders, to issue duty rosters, to command the ship if the captain is absent, and to work with the CMO or counselor on crew evaluations. The way I interpret it, the department heads basically have control over the day-to-day management of their offices.
A duty roster assigns jobs to crew members, so my guess is that the XO works with the department heads to create a duty roster and then approves it.

And, here I thought the XO's job was to stand around and look sexy. Bridge eye candy basically.

Speaking of crew evaluations on the Sentinel, when is that happening? Because, those evaluations should make for an entertaining read.

Want to discuss it tomorrow in the RP session, or do it on the forums? It really should be Tib and Billie on this one. Edit: I'm also available from now until 11pm EST if you want to do it.
