Dstahl said the folowing on forums...
NX Class is a Tier 1 (starter ship) escort variant -Extra Tactical slot -Innate "grappler" ability, works similar to tractor beam -Can equip cannons
Its basicaly the Escort variant for the starter ships.
-long sigh- i had hopped it was gogin to be a Tier 2, but ohh well im still going to get one in all its epicness
As pumped as i am to get the NX, i am sort of bumbed by its classification. It is unfournate that cryptic chose to make it an escort as the sole purpose of hte NX class (as far as trek goes) was for exploraton. Even during there excursion in hte expanse, they time and time again made comment that "Enterprise" was built to explore and was a ship of exploration at heart.
I guess im jsut bumbed that they chose to make it a escort jsut because thats what the show turned it into. Maybee its jsut me, but i always saw the NX and every other "Enterprise" as a cruiser and ship of exploration. Sort of saddens me to see it demoted to a ship of war. But alas it is a MMO first and a Star Trek game second.
Just my thoughts on the subject, not intended to start anything, jsut felt like commenting.

They likely made the NX an escort because of its size, not because of the show. Hell, the Steamrunner was intended to be the Miranda's successor, and yet its "refit variant". the Zephyr, is an escort.

Crypitc has already put out special cruiser class ship (excelsor), and a specialized science one (Nebula), for the sake of gaming a specalized escort class was overdue in my opinion.

I would agree that an escort is due, however the NX is only goign to be a starter ship, at least for the next 6months. There is still not a "speical" escort class ship T3/T5
The NX its self is technicaly a light cruiser being a T1, however the love they gave it sort of makes it more combatish.
I dont disagree with there reasoning of it being an escort or a T1 ship, but the NX class as far as startrek is concerend was never ment to be a combat ship. Thats all i was saying.
As far as its size goes.. That is sorta silly to think they made the oldest ship in the game a "escort" jsut becasue it was the smallest. Escorts are all about tactical ability. Size is a big part, however, weapon power and combat ability is much more so. That being said the NX is far from what i would consider a combat ship. In all reality any other ship in hte game should be able to out class it at every turn.
Even if it is updated, due to cryptic sticking with it being the origonal NX, it is much more limited than any of the other ships, due to its own design. Times have changed and more modern ships, even the connie, are much more upgradeable to newer tech becasue they were designed to be refited.
I wish they would have gone with their origonal concept of it being a new ship wearing an old skin, it would have then made since as an escort, and could have been placed in line with the exc and nebula as a T3/T5 ship. The gap of a proper "speical' escort is still wide open. THe NX has not and cannot fill that hole because it is a starter ship.
Simple fact is STO is a buisness first, a MMO second, and a Trek Game comes up a distant third. What tehy decided to make ships as far as the "game" is concerend, does not mean you can simply dismiss anythign and everyhting that has been established about them in canonical works.
I get that were all RPing around STO's mechanics, however If I understand thigns corectaly, we are Star Trek RP'ers who happen to be using STO for such. Just becasue cryptic does it "their" way does not mean we should have too as well. At the end of a day they will do what their customers want before what is right according to Trek, so I dont belive we should realy take everything they do as in the best intrests of Trek.

I think the NX would be a great escort if they build something like the overcharge canon ability in it. You know the one from the series where Trip blasted away an entire mountain with one shot. (at least I think it was Trip)

it was trip the second time when they used it to shoot the enemy ship. It overloaded durring the test becasue of a device that hte enemy had left in the shuttle bay. Which carcher told off then shot.
It would be a neat ability, but it is sorta similar to "overload beam array". Im hopeing that they at least put in "Phase cannons" in stead of jsut using default phaser arrays
