Star Trek has a rich gaming tradition that goes from table top games to computer games of all varieties.
The first Star Trek computer game was back in the mid 70's. Super Star Trek for the TRS-80. I got the program from a computer BASIC gaming book and programmed it. Enterprise = E, Klingons = K and think my photons = *
I started back in the day with the table top Star Fleet Battles, back in the early 80's

The first computerized version of Star Fleet Battles was done on the Apple II called The Warp Factor.

I mention this mostly to give context as well as tracing the roots of the star ship battle system we enjoy in game as well as the role playing we enjoy.
I will open with the Federation opening for Birth of the Federation (this is a strategy game, but still has a great video clip that serves as a mantra)

Star Trek Bridge Commander - classic game that gave a true bridge captain experience..it also has you eventually assuming command of the Sovereign, first ship of its class.

spoiler ending for those wanting it..

Star Trek Armada - real time strategy game, I note it for the unique and excellent use of science vessels and abilities, plus likely the best opening of a Star Trek game.

Star Fleet Command III -currently is the most modern direct translation of Star Fleet Battles. It also highlights something I wish Star Trek Online implemented. Voice acting...adds tremendously to the immersion.

not the best game play video, but gets the idea across

Star Trek Legacy one of the later entries. I disliked this one..hated the controls. However it does have a "trekkie" storyline and an immersion.
