<I'm opening this thread for those who wish to post about stories and thoughts about their characters in Starfleet during the Holiday season!...it is open to all. Have fun and share some spirit >
It was supposed to be a happy time for her world. The big ship from the stars had met with her people's star explorers and it seemed her people were not all alone anymore. This was good for even someone her age knew being alone all of the time was bad. It was supposed to be a happy time, ever since that big ship had met with the 'xplorer ship' there had been a lot of ships from these new people stopping by. They were all over the fun screens and monitors...they came in all kinds of colors, red blue..even PINK!
The whole planet was happy, it seemed all of the hives were talking about nothing but their new friends from space. Their ships were up there and even so they visited so many hive cities now. Though they were all very strange, they all seemed so friendly and even one of the pink ones had called this time of year special to their people.
She didn't see things as special nor happy. How could she?
Tessa was just eight seasons old but she knew when she heard her Momma and Daddy were talking about her little brother, Andros. All she knew was that he was very sick and Daddy kept saying they were completely out of money. Tessa sighed as she sat against her chamber door, knees pulled tightly to her little chest. They were moving to an 'partment complekx' next month because Daddy didn't have the money for the doctor bills and their hive.
Mommy kept saying only a very costly surgery could save Andros now and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money.
They had to have money for Andros or he would just keep getting sicker.
She snuck down the stairs cautiously in time to hear her Daddy say to her tearful Mother, his tone was filled with whispered desperation, "Only a miracle can save him now."
That was it! Tessa thought, Her teacher had said one of the visitors had this the season of miracles. She could -do- this! She could help Andros!
Tessa flitted back up the spiral staircase awkwardly floating on her wet wings to her bedroom and pulled a small box from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes. This was for her brother! Carefully placing the coins back in the box, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks in the cold to the medicine store near her home. Mommy was here a lot to buy things for Andros.
She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was busy talking to this very strange woman and couldn't be bothered by an eight seasoned larvae at this moment. Tessa was more than a little frightened of the way the other woman looked and sounded. Though her religious teacher said people who looked like that were bad, Her Mommy told her never judge a insect's shell by their markings. Well strange scary woman or no strange scary woman Andros needed help, she couldn't wait any longer.
She twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing ...
She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good ...all that happened there was the strange blue lady looked...not her! Tessa did not want her attention!
Tessa sighed and finally she took a silver remnar from her box and banged it on the glass counter.
That did it!
"And what do you want?" The pharmacist buzzed in an annoyed tone of voice as he looked over and down to her. "I'm talking to a VERY important costumer right now " He said, without waiting for a reply to his question.
"Well, I want to talk to you about my brother!" Tessa answered back, buzzing in the same annoyed tone. "He's really, really very sick ... and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now." The Pharmacist blinked as she asked.."So how much does a miracle cost?" she demanded "My family needs one real bad"
"We.... don't sell miracles here, little girl" Her face fell. "I'm sorry but I can't help you." the pharmacist said, softening a little.
"Listen, " She pleaded holding out her box "I have the money to pay for it. I have been saving all my life! Please, If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. I /promise/! Just tell me how much it costs."
The strange woman walked over to her, her strange clothes, a red and black marked coat of some kind, a crimson skirt with these hard black boots. Her blue skin stood out in contrast to the red of her uniform, so like those of her planet's strange new friends. Interestingly enough she had antennae, that meant she must be sort of like her people..but she still looked scary as she knelt down before the trembling child. Tessa was very frightened but held her ground for Andros. The woman's eyes seemed as if chiseled from ice and she had a long jagged scar down the left side of her face. So much like the guardians of her world. Her eyes though seemed softer to Tessa now somehow as she observed the child. The blue woman tilted her head to the side as she regarded the little girl, her own antennae wishing to and fro as she then asked, "What kind of a miracle does your brother need child?" Her voice was like music to Tessa who turned to meet the strange woman's gaze.
"I...I.. don't know." Tessa replied with eyes now filled with tears. "I just know he's really, really sick and Mommy says he needs a operation. But my Daddy can't pay for it, so I want to use my money."
"You are not afraid?" The woman said with a mock frown. " To be out alone and talking to strangers about this?"
Tessa puffed up her little chest "He is my brother and he is sick, I can help and I am not afraid" She lied, trembling before the stranger.
The blue woman looked to the pharmacist as yet another stranger walked up with the Pharmacist's assistant. He was one of the pink strangers from the stars. He had a uniform like the blue woman's only it was blue in some areas and he had funny yellow hair running around his chin. The blue woman looked at him and he smiled to her then she looked back at Tessa with a strange smile on her face.
"Well now little warrior...How much do you have?" She asked.
"Captain!" The other stranger began and was stopped with the blue woman snapped her hand up to silence him.
"One dokar and eleven remnars." Tessa answered. "And it's all the money I have in the world, but I can get some more if I need to......I Promise"
"I am sure that your promise is a true as your courage"
"Oh it IS!" Tessa nodded over and over, her hearts pounding with a new hope now.
Well, what a coincidence." The blue woman smiled softly. "A dokar and eleven remnars happens to be the exact price of a miracle for little brothers of such a brave young warrior as you." She reached out and took the small box Tessa offered her and then the woman stood taking Tessa's little hand within her own and said , "Let's go see your mother and father." She threw a look to the man in blue and black and said "My friend Grant and I wish to see your brother" She then whispered down to the little one. "Grant is one of our best doctors.
" ....'kay" Tessa said nodding, she tightly grasped the blue woman's hand. A doctor was a good thing. She knew that from what Mommy and Daddy had always said. Even if they occasionally had to give shots.
"Let's see if we have the kind of miracle you need." Something about the blue woman's smile gave even more hope to the little one, She wasn't even surprised to see that her strange blue helper had a friend who followed closely behind them. Didn't miracle workers always have friends to help them?
Overcoming their apprehension and shock at the strange appearance of Tessa's bizarre escort back home, Tessa's parents seemed to relax as Tessa's miracle workers told them they were from something called 'Starfleet'. That word seemed to make things all better and then she watched as they introduced Andros to Doctor Mason and his "Captain'....the blue woman...
Tessa understood then, she had found the strangers from the stars, their worlds new friends. They had to help, didn't they?
'Captain', Tessa thought, 'Captain', I will remember that name. She watched carefully as 'Captain' reached out and touched her brother's tiny head as the pink doctor waved this little silver cylinder around her brother that he took from a chirping box he held in his hand. Tessa clung to the door frame of the living room as her little eyes watched intently as they looked after her baby brother. The pink doctor took 'Captain' aside and they spoke in low tones. Their talking was so strange to Tessa...they never buzzed.
After a little bit more whispering the pink doctor went over to talk to mommy and daddy and that was when 'Captain' looked over her shoulder to Tessa. She gave her a single wink and a smile, The Captain's antennae were strong and rigid now and her smile to Tessa warm and friendly. Tessa beamed inwardly, The Captain was going to help Andros!
Daddy and Mommy went with the pink doctor and 'Captain' to their ship up in space, after 'Captain' had spoken to someone in the air. She watched as they and her family twinkled out and vanished into the air. Tessa had to stay at home with her aunt and uncle but not before she and the Captain had said their good byes. She had been called a 'brave and honorable little warrior' by her new friend and told not to worry.
She worried anyways but the 'Captain's Miracle' was perfect, Tessa thought happily the next morning, when her Mommy and Daddy brought Andros home and he was /all/ better!
Mommy and Daddy were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place over the morning meal.
"That woman", her Mom whispered, " what she and that doctor did for Andros was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost? I mean if we had to have gone ahead with the surgery?" Tessa watched her Daddy shake his head.
"I don't know sweetheart" he said. "I just dont know"
Tessa smiled. She knew exactly how much such a miracle cost ... one dokar and eleven remnars, and you get one!
All you need to do was as Mommy said by not judging a insect's shell .... being brave for your little brother and trusting a blue miracle worker named 'Captain'.
The pink ones had called this the season of miracles. That is how Tessa would always remember her 8th season, the miracle season when she decided someday she would be a 'Captain' for someone someday too!
