TITLE OF LOG: Personal Log #1
My first log entry to the fleet records, and hopefully I'll be able to add further entries covering my personal views over the foreseeable future. Basically since my rather forced promotion to command aboard the Generis back in the Vega Incident, its been an interesting ride. I've had to contend with commanding a crew, coping with casualties, co-ordinating men and women under fire and scared. This is counterbalanced with the proud feeling of success and achievement not only achieved by our crew, but by our aging vessel. My previous Captain, Capt. Vorlen Tar was a couragous and patient leader of people. To fill his position was difficult, but a proud moment. I hope I have not disappointed those under my command.
Our missions have been tough, and interesting. We've had successes, and we've had failures. I've lost crewmen under my command, and the pain doesn't get easier. You just have to find a way to deal with it better each time. They will not be forgotten, and their dedication only inspires us further on, in this time of tensions and threats.
So on to our position in a new ship, a promotion and a proud member of a very special fleet. Firstly, I was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and with it, the command of a new starship: the Excaliber class USS Europa, a Cruiser class vessel. She has and still continues to impress all my crew, and they are quite proud to be aboard her. Our mission list can now be expanded and we are more capable of being able to react to any front line situations as they arise. I always get a grin when we pull into spacedock. I know there are bigger, more powerful vessels, but she is our ship and we love her.
We are proud to be an active part of the Daedalus Omega Fleet, and our very good friends and colleagues Lt Cmdr Nyoko Honda, Admiral Spenta Myrunji (USS Kendra) and Captain Sullivan (USS Phobetor). The fleet continues to grow from strength to strength. Lt Cmdr Honda and I have a special relationship, you could say. We were actively forming a sqadron to tackle operations together before the fleet was formed. We've known each other for only a short while, in terms of our respective careers, but we were both forced into our commands in special circumctances. We both have a mutual respect for each other, and our skills and abilities (and our crews) merge quite well. I must also state that this "mutual respect" does allow for special allowances, in case I get mesmerized by an alien plant and try to marry it, Nyoko can shoot me in the ass. Its a special relationship, you see.
But seriously, do feel Miss Hondas' pain in the uncomfortable task of memorial servies and facing the fallens' next of kin. We have to do it, and we do it with no malice. But its tough. But we're in command, and its the job we do. She knows that each of us are there, should we need to talk about things, and I know that Admiral Myrunji is a pillar of strength for her, and us all.
The situation of the Europa after the action in the Xarantine Sector is stable at the moment. Our recent repairs have been going well, and thanks to the medical teams from the Yoshimoto, our wounded are re-couperating very well. We're fully operational, but a phase of repair time in Earth Spacedock wouldn't go amiss. Our losses are listed as 14 killed and 47 wounded, of which 12 were serious. The pounding we recieved would suggest more but our engineering and repair teams were frantic in their work to stabilise our EPS and control systems while under fire. I have forwarded details to Starfleet regarding our losses, and also for commendations for acts of bravery while under fire.
And finally, the fleet may be getting a new addition. Lt Cmdr Laurel Orkney. She commands a science vessel similar to Lt Cmdr Honda, and her abilities in a combat situation are excellent. The two science teams co-ordinate very well together, and Lt Cmdr Orkney would fit so well in our Nu Squadron. We should organise a meet as we've not actually met in person. I'll contact Lt Cmdr Honda to set something up.
I must end now, as I have to prepare for our trip back to Earth for commencement of memorial services for the families. We've conducted our on-ship ceremonies, but the familes will now get the chance to put their loved ones to rest. Those not of Earth origin will be invited to attend at Earth, or we will visit them on their homeworlds at their request.
