Assignment/Character History:
2408 – Graduated Starfleet Academy, Medical Division.
Assigned as Medical Staff to the 66th Fleet under Vice Admiral Ravil Kavalon.
During the first six months of active duty, Veda continued on-the-job training under various Medical Officers and Starfleet Scientist including Admiral Kala Duran, Commander Rioti Vin Photik, Commander Drem T’Preg and Commander Magnus Meister. Most of the 66th Fleet’s Science Officers specialized in analysis, photonic research and starship sensor systems. This along with her eagerness to go anywhere, left Veda as the only combat medic on many of the 66th’s adventures.
Veda was awarded the Starfleet Medal of Exploration for discovering a new species of plant. She named it the Kadur-Oak; after Admiral Kala Duran for inspiring Veda to continue her scientific pursuits, no matter how small and also due to the plants similarity in appearance of the Quercus rubra.
Upon one dangerous and secretive mission into Romulan space, Admiral Duran lost consciousness while in command of the U.S.SHawking, in the chaos as Veda gave medical treatment, thinking only of the patients condition, she passionately argued with First Officer Shalan over the safest means of escape. During later review of the incident, the 66th Fleet command decided that Veda possessed that ‘spark’ needed by a starship captain. After a few more recommendations by various captains flying with the 66th, Veda was promoted.
As Lieutenant Commander and Chief Medical Officer upon the U.S.S.Thermopylae, Veda was working not only with the 66th, but with their link to the Diplomatic Corps.. Commander and Envoy Drem T’Preg. Drem never stepped down from the challenge of attempting to solve situations peacefully, even if it meant danger to herself and often times it did. The most drastic of medical procedures involved surgery to rejoin Trill and Symbiote. In time, Drem made a few ‘mistakes’ that put Veda in the position of having to break Federation Law, or command the ship herself. After returning the rogue crew back to the hands of Starfleet.. Veda began working directly under Admiral Duran, resuming the duties of combat medic.
2409 – Veda spends a good deal of her time in medical research and experimentation, particularly for a group of Federation allies labeled as the Void Nomads (or Voidwalkers) by the Diplomatic Corps. Veda makes fast friends with their charming Ambassador X'an Zas Scheurri Na' Neuhr.
The 66th Fleet intensifies it’s resolve in Romulan Space, the need for starship captains and referrals from Fleet members landed Veda a position as Acting Captain of the U.S.S.Pardus. The job was taken with the stipulation that her cousin, Commander Mervin Corsten serve as First Officer. Merv was the older, more serious of the two but the balance between the Corstens proved itself a formula for success.
Approximately five months into her tour as a captain, an emergency call reached Starbase 39, a small Federation Colony within the Hromi Cluster had spent the last two weeks repelling an invasion. It was very likely they would require medical aid. Captain Freddy Chaplan of the U.S.S.New York led a group of ships, one being the Pardus, in a rescue and relief attempt. After the first successful rescue, Veda led a skeleton crew back into the chaos to protect the planet from the second wave of attacks.. however the Pardus did not survive. Veda and her bridge staff crash landed in shuttle pods upon a planet with a potentially toxic atmosphere. Resourcefulness, medical skill and the redesign of what supplies the group had kept them alive long enough to be found, however by that time the humans were suffering a mild poisoning, Veda was the worst among them. Vice Admiral Ravil Kavalon joked that Veda would have to make monetary amends to Starfleet for the lost vessel, or else she’d be demoted. Veda however took it seriously and the time off for recuperation was spent in the liquidation of her goods, the requesting of a loan from her family and hours at the dabo wheel. Veda turned over 500,000 gold pressed latinum and promised she’s spend the rest of her career working off the remainder of the debt to Starfleet. It seemed once again, Veda’s peculiar ways caught the attention of her superiors; the funds actually did help Starfleet and in time landed Veda, with another promotion, into a new ship.
The U.S.S.Onca (NX-94638) Intrepid-class refit was a ship of beauty. One that made even the self-proclaimed ‘doctor first’ Commander Veda Corsten want to be a starship captain. Admiral Duran had been working on cloaking device technology and sensor research, with the implementation of new systems upon the Onca, Veda and crew were sent by the 66th Fleet into the neutral zone. Outstanding new additions to her crew were Lieutenant Commander Troxi Joslin, Science Officer recognized for her expertise with deflectors and Lieutenant Alexander Mhora, Engineering Officer, the man who kept the warp core from exploding upon the U.S.SNew York three months earlier.
Becoming an expert at starship ‘medicine’ was an entirely different ballgame than being the combat medic, it was all about the perfect balance between deflectors, shields, auxiliary and sensor systems.. and the need to know more about the metal that protected the organics than the actual biology of those upon the ship. Veda struggled with this concept, and despite doing her job, her mindset remained that of doctor and not truly a ship captain. Being in the frontlines of the war, gave Veda many opportunities to use her skill with medicine directly upon not only her crew but other Starfleet Officers and Ship Captains. Captain Tarrak, of the U.S.S.Katana became a valuable ally, able to challenge Veda logically on medical and tactical topics.. it is possible some of his training in Vulcan meditation and how to safely overload and recalibrate a standard phaser sniper rifle saved her life a few times. During a visit to her friend and colleague on Deep Space 9, Veda was at the right place at the right time for a doctor.. and delivered a healthy baby boy, Michael Thompson, son of Deep Space 9 Chief Engineer Soley Thompson and Admiral James Thompson.
2410 – The U.S.S.Onca with Commander Veda Corsten as acting captain continues as part of the 66th Fleet’s Breen Task Force, along with three other starships. Lieutenant Mhora is promoted and reassigned to the U.S.S.Hawking as Chief Engineer.. during the celebration, Admiral Duran falls suddenly ill, poisoned. Veda is able to discern the cause, an insect venom, and administer quick medical attention. Not long afterwards, Admiral Duran decides to change her focus to that of instruction and research, handing over command of the U.S.S.Hawking. As the crew awaits reassignments, Veda visits with some of them upon K-7. A conversation discussing some of her career-long research into the Voidwalkers is overheard and misunderstood, leading to the accusation that Veda was into the science of building bodies, genetic engineering. Admiral Kavalon begins an investigation, during which time Veda discovers her accuser, a Captain Valentine Fox of the U.S.S.Perseus. In time, after the review of her medical records and the testimony of former Admiral Duran, Commander Photik, Lieutenant Commander Mhora, and the Onca’s crew.. Veda is cleared of all charges.
However, the ball was set in motion, debates with Captain Fox over the significance of science in Starfleet motivated Veda to prove the value of having a doctor in command, on the front lines of battle. Veda requests a transfer to an assignment solely within the neutral zone. She is reassigned under Admiral Eric Duckman, Aurora Fleet.
As time passes, Veda works alongside the many captains of Aurora Fleet, and while she was technically the acting captain of the U.S.S.Onca, it seemed her duties continued to learn more towards the medical. The ship and it’s crew became a flying hospital. Only the computer can accurately recall the number of battles Veda fought alongside the men and women of Aurora Fleet. Medical mysteries and scientific research into the unusual took a backseat and now it was a good day when everyone was patched up without the need for shore leave. The frantic chaos of practicing medicine during the day by night by day frontline fighting slowly put a strain upon Veda’s personal life, romance and friendships suffered and yet she didn’t even seem to notice.. for she was too busy trying to be the CMO of the very ship under her command.
With the assistance of Mervin, Veda is able to design earrings that work as functioning psionic inhibitors, the ‘jewelry’ is able to be tuned through various frequencies. Prototypes as well as a complete scientific report is handed over to Starfleet Command and also given to X’an, in hopes that it would assist his species.
The Onca is refit once again with an ablative armor, and improved deflectors, making her an even more valuable Medical ship. Veda begins to shadow the starships of her superiors, following Admiral Erad Timper, Captain Ryan ‘Locutus’ Herrod and Captain Matthew Reynolds into and out of skirmish after skirmish. The only shore leave taken was during ship repairs and became an opportunity to study another facet of science.
2411 – Veda returns to San Francisco for a three-month course to continue her Medical Education in light of new breakthroughs in treatments since her Academy graduation. During a seminar focused upon the possible uses of Borg nanoprobes, Veda renewed her friendship with Captain Hannibal ‘Solus’ Seru, a liberated borg working under orders above her clearance level. Solus reminded Veda of the excitement that could come from medical research and the importance of controlled scientific experiments however she was unable to complete their theories for her assignment with Aurora Fleet called her back to the stars. Veda contacted retired Admiral Duran and passed along her medical advancements into the Voidwalkers for continued research.
Veda remains as acting captain of the U.S.S.Onca, under direction of Admiral Timper without incident until November 2411. An undetected Klingon force launches an attack against the Aurora Fleet ships within the Zibal System. By the end of the battle, ships and crew were lost. Veda was among the survivors, however the Onca and Mervin were not. Without a ship and with the loss of her cousin, Veda resigned from active duty with Aurora Fleet.
Veda exhibits signs of posttraumatic stress disorder and voluntarily seeks medical treatment. A mentor from the past, Doctor T’Pex, Chief Medical Officer of the U.S.S.Destiny, comes to Earth for a visit.. this is the same doctor who finalized a cure for the rare human genetic disorder T-T-Sapex and sponsored Veda for early admittance to Starfleet Academy. Whatever secrets the physicians shared encouraged Veda and within two months she was ready to continue her service to Starfleet, however as a grounded Lieutenant Commander.
2412 - Veda continues her career as a doctor in the San Francisco Starfleet Medical Center. She is content with this assignment for awhile, until her past finds her in the face of Matt Reynolds. Once his treatment is concluded, Veda decides to relocate.. taking the position as the Assistant Chief of Medical Staff at the Denver, Colorado Medical Center. The new job was a success for the both of them, a doctor spent years in study but some techniques could only be learned by experience, the sort of experience that Starfleet had given Veda and she now brought back to the hospital. The time went by quickly, yet quietly and Veda settled into the ‘normal’ life, the most exciting thing to happen in months was the adoption of her pet Sehlat, Fizz. The only contact Veda had with her past was by way of her friendship with X’an, though his charm and diplomatic wisdom always pointed towards the future.
Yoko Corsten becomes pregnant, Veda oversees her medical care and in time delivers the baby, Wilson Corsten. This is the second time Veda has witnessed the birth of a family member.
2413 - Captain Valentine Fox offers Veda the job of Chief Medical Officer upon the U.S.S.Orion. There is an instant sense of dread that comes to Veda’s mind at the thought of returning to space, however the reality of her friends dying when she could help them is a greater fear. Upon the promise that Veda would never have to captain a starship, she agrees to join the crew, returning to active duty with Starfleet as Lieutenant Commander Veda Corsten, CMO of the U.S.S.Orion. This was another chance, to once again embrace the wonders of science in action and even though she would not proclaim it, Veda holds a confidence that regardless of what any number of hostile forces threw at them.. Valentine Fox was not going down in an exploding ship, there was a silent and certain resolve about him that quelled the anxiety and promised success. In all that has changed and throughout the various assignments she has had.. Veda is a Doctor, and that’s all she ever really wanted to be.
