SFMC Record:
Name: Manion Xavier Butler VI
Rank: Lt. Colonel (SFMC), Brevet Lieutenant (Starfleet)
Age: 36 (05/23/2373)
Race/Birthplace: Human (Earth) / Annapolis, Maryland, Earth
Serial Number: SFMC-958654
Appearance: Manion is a prim and proper Gentlemen, just as his mother and father had raised him. His only out of place feature is his wavy brown hair, despite all of his training (not to mention the insistence of his parents) he keeps his hair just long enough to be wavy, refusing a more standard "Buzz Cut".
Personality: Manion is an easy going and laid back person. Though he can quickly switch between his normal disposition and a much more conducive "Combat Detachment" that his family is famous for.
History:
Manion was the first born of Major General Michelle Butler and Colonel Manion Xavier Butler 5th: Both parents being Career Marine and their parents before them and before them for 30 generations. Each family is able to trace its history back to important United States military figures. On one side that would be Smedly Darlington Butler who was awarded 2 Medals of Honour for 2 separate acts of Heroism, he was also renowned for having testified in Congress of a plot to overthrow the American Government. On the other side he is a descendent of Lewise Burwell Puller, who was known to his friends as "Chesty", who was the most-decorated Marine in history, his awards include 5 Navy Crosses and The Army Distinguished Service Cross. So needless to say his parents were big on military Discipline and culture, in fact Manion’s first haircut was a "Buzz Cut". Manion grew up in a military household, and was expected to excel in all things military. So his childhood was rather different from most, morning runs, swimming, rifle ranges, and military history passed by him in a flash as he grew.
By the time he entered the JSFMC-ROTC at 16 he had already lived a life of military service and discipline. While in his first year he served on Color Guard, Drill Team and was Captain of the Marksmanship Team. By the end of his first Semester he had already been promoted to the rank of Cadet Sergeant, and had already received the Superior Marksman, Distinguished Military Training, Distinguished Conduct, Rifle Team, Color Guard, Drill Team, Best Drill Cadet, NCO Leadership, Civic Service, Student Leadership, Distinguished School Achievement, National Sojourners, Outstanding Cadet, Deadalian Award, Retired Officers Award, Military Order of World Wars, Federation Legion Award for Military Excellence, Federation Legion Award for Scholastic Excellence, and the Navy League Youth Medal: Showing his dedication and service.
His abilities continued throughout his term in the SFMC-ROTC, the program and his parents had both intended on sending him to Annapolis for further training. Though in defiance of both parties he attended Cambridge, where he enrolled for a Bachelors of Classics. While there he still attended the NJROTC program sponsored by Starfleet. He graduated 4 years later with his BA/CGL, while in the ROTC program he achieved the rank of Cadet Colonel, and had received even more ribbons, citations and medals. It seemed that he couldn't escape his fate in the military, so instead of transferring to Columbia to take his Teaching Degree he instead entered The Basic School to begin training as a Starfleet Marine Officer. He was chosen for the "Weapons and Tactics Instructor-Intelligence Officer" MOS, where he would be expected to learn the Weapons and Tactics of foreign powers. He found he excelled quite well at this in his time at the TBS and Annapolis. Upon graduation he was commissioned at the Rank of Second Lieutenant.
Due to his skills and abilities, not to mention his parents’ connections, Manion was then assigned for further training at the Starfleet Intelligence Headquarters (SI HQ). He was given the choice of a foreign power to specialize in and he chose Klingon, as he personally admired their warrior type culture. He also chose them since with the impotence of the Federation Ambassadors amid the High Council, it became more and more evident that they would soon come to war again. Manion spent the next 2 years at the SI HQ studying the weapons and tactics of the Klingon people. Manion also got the Chance to study captured Klingon Weapons, and to participate in interrogations of capture Klingon prisoners. By the end of his first year he was able to converse fluently in Klingon, and had the respect of a handful of captured Klingons. It was from these Klingons that he was taught not only the "Warrior Way" but also the use of the Bat'leth, D'k Tahg, and Mek'leth. Manion had the good luck of also serving on Starfleet vessels during 4 separate encounters with the Klingon People; he was even able to talk to Admiral Picard, Ambassador Worf, and Ambassador Garak about their encounters with the Klingons. At the end of his 2 year term at the SI HQ, Manion wrote a definitive work on the Klingon Culture, as well as a separate report to the Joint Chiefs and the C-in-C of Starfleet about the Klingons Military Weapons and Tactics. For his work with the SI he was promoted to the rank of Captain (Lieutenant).
After Graduating from his time with SI Manion was assigned to “Light Duty” by his father, who didn’t want to see his son placed in harm’s way. So for the first 3 years of his commission he was first placed as Battalion XO of the Arlington Cemetery Honour Guard Battalion, for distinguished service to the Corps he is promoted to the Rank of Major. At the end of his term at Arlington, he was re-assigned to the Presidential Honour Guard Battalion. He would serve faithfully in his position, and made it up to CO of the 1st Rifle Unit, whose job it was to be the president’s “Garde de Manche” (Guards of the Sleeve). In 2404, things would take a dramatic twist for him, he was summoned into the president’s office, when he arrived he found the C-in-C of Starfleet, Commandant of the Starfleet Marine Corps, the Joint Chiefs, and the dishevelled and worried looking former Federation Ambassador to Q’onos. The President ordered Manion to take a seat, and Manion heard the distinguished men argue about what response to take in regard to the Klingon “request” to evacuate the Hromi cluster. The men were complacent, and insistent that the Klingon Threat was only a ploy to gain political ground. Manion had had enough and stood, and voiced his opinion that the men were stupid, and underestimating the Klingon threat. For he knew that if the Klingon’s felt a strong enough reason to posture and threaten in this matter, that they weren’t simply going to back down. For his actions in the meeting, Manion was assigned as Marine Corps Liaison and Special Consultant to the Hromi Cluster Taskforce. He would advise and guide during the 3 months they had to wrap things up. Then in early 2405, the taskforce got word that the Klingon’s had forcibly invaded the Hromi Cluster and were blockading Corovat. Manion was placed as CO of the 256th Marine Battalion and was tasked with the Ground Evacuation and protection of the Civilians on Corovat. This would be the first heavy combat that Manion had ever seen, and he distinguished himself in the field for bravery and skill.
Manion was in the Governor’s office trying to convince the Federation Governor to leave, when a Dahar Master burst into the room, the venerable Klingon was alone, so Manion ordered his men to take the Governor out through the other doors while he covered them. The two men battled for what seemed like hours, Manion was an expert on Klingon weaponry and tactics, and so was the Dahar Master. In the end a tired & wounded Manion came out on top, if only just. He took the man’s blade as his own, as well as his insignia’s.
For his efforts in the battle he was decorated again, by Starfleet, the Federation, and the SFMC, he was also promoted to the Rank of Lt. Colonel. He was then assigned as 157th Marine Battalion Commander and Liaison to the Araxnis Sector Task Force. He would serve 3 years with them, but found that he was being underutilized, and put in for a transfer to Task Force Hydra’s new Marine Unit.
Manion's time with Task Force Hydra, was marked by distinction and service. He served faithful as he was called upon to create fleet specific Uniforms for the other Starfleet Marines assigned to the fleet. His efforts got glowing reviews from both the Task Force CO and XO. At the time of the unveiling of the uniforms Manion also made it know that he was placing his name forward for consideration for the position of Colonel, which would place him in charge of all the Marines assigned to Task Force Hydra. Unfortunately as Starfleet had already earmarked Task Force Hydra for dissolving and re-assignment, his request was denied and he was given his choice of new assignment, thus putting in his transfer request to Daedelus Omega.

Captain's Personal Log,
Today I participated in a Mok'bara training session with a Captain Donaldson from Daedalus Omega. The man showed fine form, and a knowledge of the Martial Art, that I have not seen since my days at SI. Despite the man's deference and the honour he gave me in the class, I must admit that I was hard pressed to beat him, even going so far as to use some of the obscure techniques I had learned from captured Dahar masters. In the end I had one, but I would venture to say that it was due not to any skill of mine that was superior to his, or his own deficiencies, but to sheer dumb luck. I had been attempting to deflect an attack and achieved the killing blow. At some future date I am sure that I will re-challenge him to sate my own honour in regards to this matter.
In the mean time I have chosen based on the actions I saw today, to formally submit my application for transfer to Daedelus Omega. As the actions of this man were both honourable, and most importantly if the other members of his fleet are half the man he is, then I will have found a place filled with honourable, skilled, and worthwhile individuals. I can only hope that my time with this fleet, will prove more fruitful then my last.

I have been informed that Lt. Colonel Manion Butler of the Starfleet Marine Corps, has finally submitted his paper work for transfer, after the debacle that was Task Force Hydra. I would like to personally assure you that this young man, though he comes from the far less popular and less known Starfleet Marine Corps, that his skills would be an invaluable asset to your fleet. Since the closing and liquidation of Task Force Hydra's assets, I have had the honour and privilege of getting to know this man a little, while his ship was in space dock awaiting reassignment. I would venture to say that Butler is not a man to be overlooked. In fact it was he that contacted me first, for almost 4 weeks he submitted time and time again to my secretary for an appointment, and time and time again she informed him that I was too busy to see him. Not taking no for an answer he showed up in my office with a full Marine Honour Guard to *Inform* me that I was being honoured with a Marine Mess. To say I was surprised would be an understatement, but in the end I conceded to him, if for nothing else just to get him off my back. He hosted the dinner on his own ship, and surprised me again when he informed me that all the food was hand prepared, and not replicated, by their in house Chef. Up until that moment I cannot say that I had ever met anyone from the SFMC before. Certainly I had seen them in passing during my shore leaves on Earth, as they are still tasked as they have always been with the Protection of the President, and the protection of our most sacred and honoured locations on Earth. But the more we talked, the more I found myself impressed by their dedication to the cause and their skill.
After the dinner, I arranged to have dinner with the man at least twice a week to learn more about him and his obscure little branch of the Federation. Turns out that they are actually a division of Starfleet, but one that operates parallel and in tandem with our own. Despite their officers not holding rank in Starfleet. Thus I was interested to know more about their structure and operation, turns out that there are at least 4 ships in operation in the fleet right now that are staffed entirely by Marines. Though they are using their own vessels, whether this is out of pride, necessity, or some other reason I cannot fathom is beyond me. They tend to pilot old Constitution Class vessels, that have been retrofitted with newer equipment to make the viable. Turns out that the President himself tasked them back into service to supplement our forces as necessary. Though the majority of their vessels are under the command of the Commandant of the SFMC, and not Starfleet, thus why I have had no knowledge of them. Only a handful of their vessels have chosen to operate in our standard structure, and to facilitate this have often taken a lower Brevet Rank within Starfleet then they themselves hold in their own Command Hierarchy, in an attempt to bring awareness and understanding of their obscure division to the rest of the fleet.
On a final note, I have also had the chance to consult with Mr. Butler in regards to the Klingon Situation, and have brought him in to consult with me and my advisors in regards to this situation. His knowledge in regards to them, not to mention his first hand experience, is beyond anything that I am aware of, that is currently available amid Fleet officers. Thus I just wanted to submit to you my personal recommendation in regards to this man's transfer request.

RE: Lieutenant Colonel Manion Xavier Butler VI
Greetings,
Before I moved to and was elected Governor of Setlik III, I was the Governor of the Corovat Colony in the Hromi Cluster. I would like to submit this letter of recomendation to anyone who seeks information about Manion Butler VI. Lt. Colonel Butler is the only reason I am alive today. When the Corovat Colony was forced to evacuate at the request of the Klingon Empire, I was still in command, and was foolish in my thought that I was untouchable in my own office. I was stalling, believing the attack to be only a ploy and I wouldn't listen to the level headed pleadings of this man. When the Klingon burst into the room, and Manion ordered his men to get me out of there, I was angry at him for circumventing my authority, how foolish I was. Manion I am told risked his life to make sure that I was able to get out of there alive, and I did. He would latter come to me at the resettlement camp, a compress still on his bleeding jaw, and without a word he simply left a Klingon PADD at my feet and walked off. It turned out that the Klingon that had burst into my office only a few days before was under orders to kill me and leave my body as an example. I had no idea, I was so naive and young then. Manion made me see that even a Federation Governor was not untouchable by the forces that rage in the galaxy around us. Thus I would like to place my personal recommendation behind anything that this mane chooses to do with his life.

To whomever may read this,
I have had the honour and privilege of having Manion Butler serve as the XO and the CO of my personal Honour Guard for the last two years. His time with me has been enjoyable and above all else impressive. The man's dedication to me was beyond belief. Certainly I had heard about the loyalty of the Starfleet Marine Corps to their Superiors, but I had never had the chance to truly experience that until now. I find myself saddened to see him go, but leave a note to all future Presidents that should you ever need a man willing to serve you above all else, and a man you can confide in that Manion is your man. That is if you can get him back on "Light Duty" as he called it. He truly resented the fact that his parents manoeuvred him as they had, thus as a personal service to the man I made sure his next assignment would lead to a more active role in his chosen vocation.
Manion is a strong and dedicated leader, stepping up to the plate where others would not, and instilling in his men a near fanaticism and dedication that I personally wish I had. Even in regards to me, I found myself coming to like him more and more during his time with me. Due to his position we spent a lot of time together, as he was personally responsible for organizing my protection everywhere we went. The one thing that I found most interesting about Mr. Butler is that he was so candid with me, all the other marines seemed to treat me with deference, certainly Butler did as well, but when we were in private he treated me differently. He treated me as a trusted friend and confidant, and I found myself relying more and more on his expertise, opinion, and above all friendship. He also displayed a tendency to be outspoken when he was strong in regards to an opinion that he held. Even going so far as berating my military advisors for underestimating the Klingon Threat. It of course turned out that Mr. Butler was correct, and that my advisors were underestimating things, which is why I was justified in assigning him to the Marine Corps Liaison and Special Consultant to the Hromi Cluster Taskforce. His work with that group and the subsequent groups after that, showed that his being assigned to "Light Duty" was not a full utilization of his talents. All I can say to those that read this after me, is that do not underestimate his talents, and do not hesitate to call upon his aide, for you just might find both a trusted ally and an even better friend.

President of the Federation
