Our attributes look low in comparison or Kirks way too high..we are using base 40 for all attributes and 40 points to distribute.
I just noticed what Brian pointed out...all I have to say is whoa. While in one side it is cool..on the other people might think we are way under skilled and powered.

Whereas 1000-1200 points would create a more TNG style character.

-nods- It does however serve as a great example that many of his point are in things most considers..useless and trivial Sure. Of course the difference between a useful skill and a useless one comes down to how often it comes into play in an adventure. Some seemingly useful skills can be quite useless in reality and some seemingly useless skills can save the day. I think a rather creative GM is going to try and work player's personal development skills into adventures, especially if those skills represent a significant part of the character's personality. For example one would expect the skill like "Trivia (Abraham Lincoln)" no never come into play in a Star Trek like setting yet the writers of Star Trek managed to fit Abraham Lincoln into and episode of Star Trek (Season three - the Savage Curtain). Then consider personal combat skills like the Batleth, or the Lirpa. How often are Starfleet away teams going to be beaming down with sword, batleth, or Lirpa in hand? not often, so save for the once off mission where so-in-so gets in a duel with someone, such skills are likely to be rather useless except for role playing. By the same token if a character has many points in a skill, say playing the harpsichord yet never once ICly do they ever take time to play the harpsichord can they really justifiy having great skill are something they never do? Seems unlikely to me. So any skill the player claims they have a significant level of skill in (no matter how useful the skill is) obligates them to incorporate that skill into their role playing somehow. Of course if the skill is part of their job function it is easy to include it in role playing, hobby skills on the other hand require a player to put in a little extra effort. A skill like trivia (stamp collecting) would be useless by any stretch of the imagination but if the character is portrayed as an avid stamp sollector yet has not points in such a skill it would be inconsistent with the character concept. However, if the player gives them a skill of 60 in the skill, yet never depicts the character sitting down with his stamp collection (either in game or through a forum post) how can such a high skill be justified.

agreed, but if the players never create characters with the personal "hooks" and personality, there is not much a GM can do

If the player doesnt want to bother with creating a rich and detailed character that is their loss and there is not much the GM can do. Generic characters get generic adventures, you only get out what you put in.

haha so since kirk is super man... i need a tattoo that said "Kirk is a pussy compared to me" I wouldn't recommend it. Every Klingon warrior out to make a name for themselves would be challenging you to a duel.

This isn't quite using the same character generation as us. An attribute spread of 70/80/80 is 230 points total and we, if we make an alien and take every attribute boosting trait available could have a total of 200.
However, this does bring up a point that I've been meaning to ask. I see that Kirk's starts here are not contrained by multiples of 5. In the character creation rules, it will often say something like... *runs to pull an example* ... *zooms back* ... this:
I have been asuming, perhaps wrongly that this means, in simpler langauge, that you get +5 to 5 skills, and +10 to (MIND - 50) / 10 skills (or 3 skills for someone with 80 mind).
However, that does not agree with the example. So my question is, is the example wrong (because it is unmodified from the FASA book, while our system -is- modified), or are the instructions incorrect?
It -looks- as if, and again, I could be wrong, that both boosts are being used in Kirk's skills.

The example needs to be fixed. I'll fix that.
