The proverbial red tape was finally cut thanks to the intervention once again of Adm S'far Gaeln. I was starting to think we had been unintentionally mothballed by Starfleet. I almost felt sympathy for my former anarchist fleet mates who chafe at such delays. Almost.
But the time in dry dock was put to good use. The ship was thoroughly cleaned and refitted. Lt Cmdr Takarra took great pride in overseeing the installation of our new Mk IV Disruptor beams.
She has been complaining during our most recent actions that the old MK IIs had not been doing the job. My argument that we are a science and research vessel with only the occasional need for offensive weaponry had grown thinner then the skin of Nausican as we seemed to find ourselves involved almost weekly firefights.
The other benefit of our layover was that the Varina has not looked this shape ship and shiny since the day she was comissioned.
Mother always warned me about idle hands, and Lt Zrohasa heartily agreed. She organized a round the clock maintainence schedule to keep at least half the crew constantly busy repairing or improving every system on the ship from stem to stern.
The other half of the crew were on a rotating shore leave. I did not see the sense of being so close to Earth for so long without allowing some indulgences. I myself found time for an extremely short stay on Risa and of course enjoyed the company of my fellow officers in Club 47.
But the most exciting bit of news that has come about in the last solar day has been the acceptance of my command to the Daedalus Omega fleet. I met with Adm Spenta Myrunji and Lt Cmdr Nyoko Honda for a very informal interview at Club 47. At least that's how it started.
I was surprised that our working relationship was to start out in a social club, but I quickly came to realize that the Adm both wanted to put me at ease and I am sure a little off my guard to truly evaluate me. He is obviously a man that values truth and honest, as most Bajorans do.
The interview ended with a serious inspection of the ship. Though I should have been anticipating it, the request was made very suddenly and I barely had time to change into my ship's uniform before Adm Myrunji and Lt Cmdr Honda arrived. I'm sure the Admiral felt he could learn more from a surprise inspection. As I said earlier, he seems to be a man looking to get to the truth of the matter.
The only hitch in the tour was that Lt. Honah had his pet tribble at his station. While I encourage the crew to have personal distractions in their quarters for their own recreation time (and I continue to discourage Holodeck use) I do not abide bringing these distractions to the bridge.
Were it not for the stealthy body blocking of Lt. Honda keeping the tribble out of view during the Admiral's time on my bridge, I am sure that my crew and I would have drawn a slight reprimand. To say the very least, it might have been seen as a lapse of discipline and at worst would have delayed or prevented our deployment with Daedalus Omega.
Fortunately, no such crises occurred. Ship and crew passed inspection and we were happily commissioned into the fleet.
Afterwords, Lt Cmdr Honda and I decided to visit the lounge to celebrate. Our celebrations was suddenly cut short by the appearance from my past of a rogue Admiral. He was suffering from a possible intoxication issue, medication imbalance, or post traumatic stress. Maybe even a combination of all three.
Him being much superrior in rank to Nyoko and myself made the situation very awkward. The timely arrival of Adm Myrunji and later Adm Gaeln helped defuse a potentially serious situation.
An inspection tour of Adm Gaeln's bridge followed during which he dropped the bomb shell of offering his services to Adm Myrunji.
Where this will lead I have no idea. It certainly brings with it many many complications. Some professional, some personal.
Seems like a really good time to go on a deep space research mission. The Daystrom Institute has sent word that an unmanned probe passing by a small moon in the Pallme system has detected a previously unkown organic compound growing on the surface. Interestingly it is growing despite the total lack of an atmosphere on that particular moon.
I've been asked if I might take a survey crew there to retrieve a sample, catalog the find and evaluate it's possible medicinal value. I anticipate the mission will take two to three days. Quite a bit of which will be spent loping around the low grav moon in an EV suit with only the sound of the occasional intercom transmission and my own breathing for company.
A good place to think.
We shall get underway tomorrow morning.
Administrative Note: The incident with Lt. Honah is not the first one. Though he has done nothing terribly wrong, he has been rated mediocre in more then one performance review.
Perhaps he is not happy serving under my command. I have been nothing but fair to him. Our crew chain is small and I must be able to rely on every link in a crises.
The Varina might be better served, were he to request a transfer.
I shall discuss his attitude and tribble issue with him before deciding.
Personal Note: Two nights ago in Club 47 a Ferengi merchant was trying to sell me a glass lotus blossom hair pin. Of course in my hair it would look look like a flower drowning in a lake of fire. It certainly wouldn't work for me at all. However with Nyoko's dark tresses I believe it would accent her face beautifully. If I can find that trader again before setting off for Pallme, I will purchase it for her to show my gratitude at her kind assistance.
Additional Personal Note: I should really consider a similar purchase for S'far for all the help he's given me of late. However, prudence suggests that I do not. For two, reasons.
The first being the inappropriate nature of a subordinate repaying what could be considered favoritism with what could be considered a bribe. Especially if he were to become my direct superior.
The second and most important reason being that S'far's shortly cropped Romulan hair would look terrible with a lotus blossom clip in it.
Though it would would make for some interesting talk around the officer's club.
Still, I shudder at the thought.
