OOC: I've been wondering about this for a few days after Nyoko questioned whether the plasma beam arrays on my ship were "legal" or not. Does the Federation have a convention on weapons? With DS9 and Voyager having ended approximately 30 years before STO, we know the Federation typically used phaser beams/cannons and used quantum and photon type torpedoes. Genetic and biological weapons are of course forbidden, but what about the plethora of other options we have in STO? We have disruptors, plasma, tetryon, chroniton and a host of other options at our disposal. I'm just wondering how we all see these from an RP point of view? Would these be seen as a violation of the conventions of war (I remember one episode of TNG mentioning some certain type of disruptor was illegal in the Federation) or are they an example of the Federation using every tool it has to survive? I guess I'm looking for a consensus, are we a "phaser fleet" or am I free to cheerily burn my victims to a nice crisp with my plasma weapons?

I'm not sure what position they have in an rp sense, but in general I can't see why you can't use anything you want. From my perspective I'd not use disrupters simply because I'm a old fashioned guy and disrupters taste of Klingon hehe, but there are loads of different types of weapons available now. I guess that time has moved on and we're more open to various weapon systems. Its a good question Veran. My answer would be.. if its a weapon system that isn't allowed in "rp star trek" then obviously we can't or shouldn't use them. It would make a good rp element if a captain used them in a pinch hehe. But as far as "getting the job done" in a game mechanic sense, go ahead and use them
