Work on the new USS Varina continues. She's shaping up to be quite an awesome ship. Working with Mathias has been quite a treat. He has many an idea I wouldn't have thought of myself. He really did miss his calling. He should consider falling back on his engineering skills as a ship designer, should the admiral thing ever fall through.
I'm glad that some of the Varina is functioning. My duties as acting CMO have had me perform a string of physicals in very short order. The Varina's lone fully functioning auxillary sick bay is getting a bit of a work out.
I really do enjoy the physicals and getting to meet the new members of the fleet in more intimate terms then formal meetings. I do my best to put them at ease. Not sure I am very successful all the time.
One patient seemed particularly ill at ease despite all my attempts to calm them. Lt. T'Shanien would seem to have some malady of which she doesn't feel comfortable sharing. As I can't detect anything physically wrong with her, I had no choice but to pass her.
I wonder if it would be better if she saw a counselor. Her issue might be one more suited for that field. I offered my services for that to her, but she declined. I will follow through though on my pledge of making a home made honeyed loaf of corn bread and sending it to the Damascus.
I have at least four more to do in very short order. I hope I can catch the officers at good times to get them on my examination table.
There was one other really interesting case. Captain Devon Scott from the "Lucky 7th" asked if I could assist him as his fleet was short of trained medical personnel. He had an issue with a silicon based virus that he had contracted in a fight with the Klingons. His EV suit had been damaged in the fight.
I thought I wouldn't be able to do much more then give him much better pain meds. But as we talked, we hit upon the idea of a nanite assault of the active virus. Of course Mathias was the man to consult with.
He was able to configure his Nanites to "eat" the virus and in doing so, rid Devon's body of the affliction. After three days, they would go dormant and be removed through the bodies natural processes.
It was a good solution and one that I shall write up a medical journal on for Starfleet records once I have time.
Time, of course, being the operative word. Seems that I have been spending a lot of very long days on the clock so to speak. I haven't talked to Nyoko really in a week and I miss her terribly. I know she has been doing trials with her new escort class ship. I hope those are going well. I'm sure we'll jaw about it soon enough.
I can relate as the new Varina has undergone a few simulated trials to test out various systems. We've just installed the last of the science consoles. Mathias wants to beef up her torpedo load. I need a bucket to catch all of Takerra's drool over these new weapons systems. And on the new bridge, she sits right beside me ready to critique my every command and blow apart anything that moves.
Speaking of Takerra's drool, I think I saw a bit of a spark between her and one of the Zerpar's bridge officers. Surprisingly not an Andorian. Maybe I imagined it.
We have all been staying on board the Zepar and it has been a nice experience. Mathias is the consummate host and more. My crew is being very well cared for and trained on the new systems thoroughly.
And It's nice to have my suggestions taken seriously. Though I have learned to trust him and when he disagrees, Mathias is usually proven right. Usually.
And when he's right, he doesn't gloat. I, however, have engaged in the occasional "Told ya so" dance. But he seems more amused then annoyed by my antics.
I think the best part about the Zepar is the fact it has a Holodeck. I have to admit, I am leery of them, having treated holo addiction several times. But maybe in moderation they can be a good thing.
Mathias has showed me his hunting program that Jak'Doh designed for him. Wow, if this is the planet that Jak'Doh hails from, it's no wonder he's so intimidating.
Mathias and I did a bit of a hunting contest there, which I won. I won through slightly less then honorable means, but all's fair, right? He didn't seem to mind. Though I did win legitimately, something I will not let him forget.
Well back to the grind, I'm sure there is some new innovation awaiting my input.
