The small community of the sea side city ever traditional was no different today than it has been on any other day. It was perfect summer day for mid-October. Children played in the yards and locals rode by on bicycles. You could not only smell the sea breeze but hear roars of the ocean water crashing upon the soft sandy beaches. It was paradise in every sense. It was home to Nyoko all her life.
Nyoko and Tanaka metalized on the street in front of her childhood home. She stood in her normal clothing that she typically wore for the beautiful south pacific weather. Her pair of retro-sunglasses mounted on her small nose, along with a light blue summer blouse and of course pair of white hot pants and sandals.
Tanaka looked around. It had been his first time to Okinawa. As Nyoko did too taking that long moment to suck in the fresh sea air as he did each time she had her own home coming.
“Sugoi!” Nyoko said after her breath stealing Tanaka’s attention.
He smiled lightly at how being home can animate Nyoko’s face. He had known her many years as to be a harden starship captain. Seeing her smile was something that was private and beautiful he thought quietly.
“This is Okinawa...” Tanaka Hann said more to himself taking in the sight.
Nyoko nodded with grin. “Home.”
“This your house?” He asked looking at the square Taketomi style housing. A basic Japanese house design of a few square houses with clay cuffed roves joined together creating court yards in-between the wings. Nyoko’s house wasn’t anything fancy and although it had been modernized the style remained classic.
“Haha Hausu,” She replied in Japanese. Hann nodded understanding.
(Mother's House)
“Come on,” She motioned him as she crossed the street.
She pulled back on the metal fence that surrounded the home and it’s small property. Such was the theme in Okinawa or any Japanese township. The country was divided between living in giant bio dome super structures called Archo. These were constructed as effort to rescue the Japanese people in the event Nuclear War strikes were ever launched against Japan during last world war. Now in modern times townships like Okinawa became known as peaceful resorts for those enjoying the paradise reputation that Earth has become known for.
Nyoko started down the path that cut through the small yard to the front door with a vegetable garden on the left side. Nyoko stopped noticing the main door but the screen door shut. She smiled lightly knowing her mother was doing the thing she loved most, gardening.
Nyoko took Hann’s hand and lead him off the path and into the garden. A quick glance between the rows and she saw her mother and grand-daughter. Then she smiled widely again Nyoko walking up to them between the cucumber and tomato plants.
Ayoko had been sitting in a seiza style as she dug into the dirt planting with her tool. The old Japanese woman whom looked much like her daughter dug deeply into dirt making space. Yuna sat not too far from her grandmother holding bag clutched in her tiny toddler hand. She was dressed in a pretty yellow dress with miniature sized rice hat to match her grandmother’s full sized one. Then when Ayoko pointed to the hole she made in the ground with her tool. Yuna not knowing the significance of what she was doing reached into the bag as she was taught and sprinkled seeds in the hole just as she was taught. Shortly after she met with praise by her grandmother.
“Guddo Yuna-chan!” Ayoko said using her native language of Japanese.
(Good Yuna dearest!)
“Haha,” Nyoko said to her mother’s back.
Then Ayoko looked over and saw her beloved daughter. The two smiled at one another and Tanaka for moment thought Nyoko had to have been a clone of her mom. He stood there to the side stoically as ever quietly taking in the scene but certainly couldn’t help but to examin the little eastern toddler whom sat in the dirt and planted seeds for her grandmother. The sceen was almost emotional and while Grand-Mother and Daughter gave each other a warm hug. He had to rub his eyes to maintain control over his emotions.
Nyoko hugged her mom and the two rubbed one another’s back.
“Nyoko-chan watashi wa anata ga kita toki ni watashi ni oshiete hoshī.” Ayoko said to her still hugging her daughter.
(Nyoko Dear I wish you would tell me when you coming home.)
“Toki ni awate watashi wa anata no kao ga sukidesu,” Nyoko responded.
(I like your face when I surprise you.)
Then two laughed and then Nyoko pulled away to look to see her baby girl playing in the dirt now smacking the ground with plastic scooper. Then Nyoko went over to scoop her daughter up and hold her close.
“Watashi no on'na no akachannnnnnnn” Nyoko said becoming emotional.
(My baby girrrrrrrl.)
The toddler girl laughed and smiled happily at the attention she was getting. Somehow as if it was magic the baby knew her mom was home. Nyoko couldn’t’ help but to kiss her daughter on for head and hug and kiss again. All along tears slipping down Nyoko’s face at how over joyed she was to be holding the truest treasure of all.
Tanaka watched quietly. He hadn’t seen Nyoko in such a nurturing mode before. In fact he only assumed that she was happy but seeing it was different. It defined a very crucial example that Nyoko had changed on some level. That the woman he had known had morphed into a Mother. Although she was similar in many ways there was intended a fundamental change in her. That perhaps Ayanami had very close rival for Admiral Honda’s affection.
Ayoko stood up from her sitting position and approached Tanaka and bowed her head forward like as any typical Japanese person would greet someone.
"Kon'nichiwa,” She said returning to her full posture after bowing.
(Hello,)
Tanaka smiled and bowed his head back down and replied the same words.
“Anata wa nihongo wo hanashimasu ka?” Ayoko asked.
(Do you speak Japanese?)
“Sukoshi dake,” Hann responded.
(Just a little.)
“Ah Federation Basic then.” Ayoko a said with smile.
“Much easier to commentate,” Hann said in a thankful tone.
“You should learn Japaense Tanaka-san!” Ayoko said.
“How did you know?” Hann said in surprise.
Then Ayoko looked over to Nyoko who was swaying and turning with the baby making her laugh.
“Nyoko has told me much about the famed Captain of the Nimitz. I didn’t have to know who you were to know that you would come home with her.” The grandmother explained.
Then Hann nodded understanding. Nyoko’s mother must have been pushing her too correct things between himself and the mother of his daughter.
“I am happy your here Captain,” She looked back to Nyoko and the baby. “I want nothing more then Yuna to know her father.”
