Star Date: 88094.79
Personnel: Commander Ethan Winegard
Location: Holodeck Seven, Starbase One, Sol System
Title of Log: Training Program
Tonight I ran my first training program on the holodeck. I would categorize it as a success. The personnel involved were Ensign Clover Khan, who was the focus of the exercise, Lieutenant Xoeni, and Lieutenant Almat Hulm.
In the Scenario the three were part of the crew of the USS Tiberius, a Nova class science vessel. Ensign Khan was in command, Lieutenant Xoeni was first officer, and Lieutenant Hulm was head science officer. Their orders took them to a system in the Hromi cluster, where a science colony on the third planet around a red giant star is being evacuated due to the expansion of the star. The Tiberius was ordered to monitor the star’s expansion, to ensure that its rate of expansion remained constant and to render any aid the evacuation transport needed. The hitch was that Klingons had been reported in the area and thus they had the added mission goal of defending the evacuation from attack.
As this was a tactical exercise, an attack is exactly what they got. Not long after arriving in system. Sensors began to register an anomaly hovering near the planets moon. I note here Lieutenant Commander Hulm’s use of tachyon beams sweeps to flush out the cloaked ship. This is a good idea and should be noted for future reference. Once again I find my self impressed with his skills as a Starfleet science officer.
It was at this point I began to have grave concerns about whether or not Khan was going to succeed at this mission. After moving to engage the hostile, a Raptor class escort, her first move was to send out an all-channel hail to ask the hostiles to leave the system. Then she fired two separate ‘warning’ shot in the hopes the hostiles would decide to leave. These tactics denoted a serious lack of knowledge of Klingon psychology and culture. I recommend that she hit the books or better yet discuss the matter with Captain Donaldson.
However, once the shooting did start, her tactics were quite impressive and the Tiberius was able to defeat the Klingon vessel quickly and with very minimal damage to the ship and only minor crew casualties. Overall I give her high marks on this training mission for her tactical knowledge and abilities. I also commend Lieutenant Xoeni for her organization and ship and crew management skills, she will make a good XO some day.
