Victor put a record on the turntable, and pressed the switch on the side of the unit.
The lights in his quarters on the Sentinel were turned down low, to about 25% -- just as he liked it. There was something about retiring to a dark room at the end of the day that was so relaxing. All day, he stared at glowing consoles. But here, he could relax.
He sat down at his desk and kicked his feet up, watching starships arrive at Starbase 220 and leave. He knew that soon, they'd be embarking too. Somehow, he avoided getting kicked off the ship. I'd like to think I talked my way out of it, he thought, but that's not the case. Make myself useful, hmm...
He laughed a little to himself. Demons... it did sound like something a maniac would suggest. Then again, if they turned out to be as hostile as we all expected, he'd be getting a pat on the back. He figured that you need to make a certain number of good calls before you were allowed to make a bad one. So, he was wrong this time. But he wouldn't be next time.
Vic took a long drag on his menthol. He wondered why these never got more popular after humanity figured out how to cure cancer. Nicotine was really something, he thought. He tried to name each ship as it pulled away from port or docked, and he was right maybe 60% of the time.
What a day, he thought.

The doors slid open to Victor's quarters, the light from the hall piercing the darkness inside. He didn't bother turning on the light as he kicked off his boots and flopped down on the couch.
"Computer, play music sample Springfield-52."
He looked up at the ceiling as he fished a pack of menthols out from underneath the couch. He thought about AJ's stick-in-the-mud stance for just a brief second before lighting up a smoke. He watched as it curled up toward the ceiling, only to be sucked away by the air circulator.
Why was it that doctors hated anything fun? Well, Billie Jo might have been an exception. Vic had her pegged for a party girl, but she's gone now, to that horrible dilithium mine. If things were different, he might have asked her out. Oh well.
At this point, he assumed that Commander Arnimane had declined his offer for dinner. She seemed like a tough nut to crack, although he was used to winning over tough nuts.
He ruminated on the situation as he slowly chainsmoked his cigarettes.

Victor didn't have much left to do at this point, so he trudged his way back to his quarters, flopping down on the couch.
"Computer, play music sample Springfield-2."
He sighed. What a day. Apparently, Admiral Compton outed him to the command staff. Now half the crew wants to wring his neck, and the other half has no idea what to make of it.
"Well," he thought. "If I get lucky, maybe Chorus will just put me out of my misery."
He stared up at the ceiling.
