I wonder if he was like " Hey you know that's not how star trek works right?" and the director got bitchy. Probably not. My guess would be concerned over getting typecasted. The only reason I can see for such a short contract is that they were worried that the role might in some way hinder their ability to get better roles in the future. I am sure he did not want to get branded as his Star Trek character forever as all the other Star Trek actors did The reports are actually that there was an altercation, all the guest stars are on one year contracts i think the only characters with multi-year ones are actually Green and the dude playing Stamets.

It could also be a reference to Get Smart, but the Control story is directly related to the Section 31 series of novels. In the novels, Control is in control of Section 31, not an AI that serves/betrays it. Discovery's rendition of course butchered the story behind it (or at least the origin story). In the S31 books, Control was actually directly responsible for the creation and management of Section 31 (actually starting in the mid to late 2100's), whereas STD has Control created by Section 31 at some point after S31's creation. memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Control_(Section_31)memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/Control_(program)A small excerpt to show how much more deeply Control worked in the novels:

You know the burnhams mother thing is even worse. Apparently in the novel they said that it was her mother that was the xenoanthropologist. So they already contradicted her own backstory that they had Mack write.

The only thing even worse about the picture is Burntham being on the bridge of the Enterprise.

On one hand, it's kinda cool to see an updated and mostly faithful Constitution bridge that is possibly more accurate to the sizing of the ship. On the other hand, having polished floors with that lighting would be a horrible working environment and must be a bitch to maintain. Not to mention trying to run on that surface during a battle. And of course the updated visuals are problematic since it predates TOS.
