Gazing out the window to the large ship being constructed before him, Captain Brian S. Donaldson still couldn't keep the depressive thoughts from entering his mind.
It has been 3 days since his wife and unborn child had been killed in a cowardly terrorist bombing of Starfleet Academy. He clenched his fist slightly at the thought of her going about her day happily and then being just snuffed out in an instant... "Unprovoked, useless, I'll kill them all, why has this happened to me?, what could I have done to stop this?, I should have spent more time with her, I love you so very much, why?... why?" he thought in quick succession.
A hand slowly touched his shoulder from beside him. "Sir, are you ok?" came the soothing voice of his XO.
He instantly composed himself, straighting, and exuding a thick air of stoicism, control, and confidence. "Fine, Commander." he replied. "It's just amazing how far construction of the new Independence has come in so short a time."
"You cant hide it from me, Brian. I've known you too long." she said with concern in her voice. "You can't bottle it up forever. You'll have to talk about it sometime, you know."
Bowing his head slightly, he sighed. "I... I know, Jorin. Im just not ready yet, ok?"
she nodded ever so slightly. "Whenever your ready, Sir... I'm here." she patted his shoulder and followed his gaze out to the shipyard, engineers and ship builders busily swarming the new ship.
"I came to bring you this." she handed the Captain the padd. "Message from Admiral Sadi, Sir."
He took the padd and briefly scanned through its contents, paused and looked at her. "Are you serious?"
He quickly shook off all vestiges of depression as training and his sense of duty took over. "I'll be in my office, Commander. Get me a line to Vice Admiral Sadi, immediately."
"Right away, sir." she replied as she hurried to comply. Not knowing why. "Vice Admiral Sadi? When did this happen?" she thought as she hurried to the com-board and began raising the Admiral's Office.
Delilah's Face instant came upon the screen. "Vice Admiral Sadi's Office. How can I help you... Ah, Commander Vall."
"I have Captain Donaldson requesting to speak to the Admiral." she told Sadi's forever present companion and confidant.
"I'll patch him through right away, Commander." replied Delilah
