The conference room was much larger than it needed to be. It could seat dozens; but then again, dozens never sat here. Admiral T'Nae sat at one end, opposite from Admiral Arak. Next to Arak was Commander Wallace, who was officially his administrative assistant. Unofficially, she was his second-in-command.
Once the group had settled in, T'Nae spoke in her usual matter-of-fact tone of voice. "Admiral, I have called this meeting to discuss the future of Project Avalon." Arak raised an eyebrow, but let her continue. "As you are aware, Project Magellan is in its final stages. It would be an understatement to say that Starfleet Command is enthusiastic about Magellan. My presence is required on an advisory committee regarding this new project, and as such, I no longer have the resources to continue as Director of Project Avalon."
Somehow, Arak always knew this was coming. But he didn't think it would be this soon.
"Although, at times, I have questioned your... capacity for logic, I do believe I have prepared you sufficiently for this task. You will act as the new Director of Project Avalon."
Arak and Wallace exchanged wordless glances before he turned back to his boss.
"When is my new position as Director effective, ma'am?"
"Immediately." She responded coldly. "I have already transferred my command codes. You are now the ultimate authority in this Project. Govern it well, Admiral. It is a position of great trust, but difficult decisions. You have already carried this burden, so you know it well. Do you have any final questions for me... Director?"
He took a moment to collect himself before speaking. "I don't have any questions for you, Admiral. We've been working together for... oh, how long has it been? Sixteen years? I want to express my sincerest thanks to you for all you've done. Not just for the Project, either."
She squinted at him slightly. He hoped that somewhere inside that Vulcan shell, he made an impact. "Admiral Arak, the last sixteen years have been... most agreeable." She showed no hint of emotion in her voice or face, but he figured that was about the best he could get out of her. "If I was a gambler," she continued, "I would wager that we will work together in the future. But gambling, as you know, is illogical."
He nodded.
"In that case, Admiral," Arak spoke, "I have nothing further to discuss at this time."
T'Nae collected her PADD, and without much further discussion, left the room.
Arak exhaled deeply and sank back in his seat, thinking about the gravity of the situation.
