Nyoko layed out in the medical recovery bench which was just another one of the sick bay’s treatment benches. Only this one was next to the window. She sat up propped up on a pillow looking off into Arucanis Arm’s pinkish nebula motif. From this angle she couldn’t see the Varina, Laurel’s ship. Trying to keep very still as any little amount of movement was dreadfully painful she waited for her medicine quietly. She was a good patient in all the nurses’ eyes, polite and quiet, and of course she was there captain. Nyoko was only left to her thoughts however, thoughts about why she chooses to work such a dangerous job, and yet to be subjected to Starfleet command nonsence of Admiral S’far, and his newest of pets, Alex.
Her thoughts could lead her to earth 20 years ago. She remembered among her earliest of memories her trip to Starfleet Academy. She was very young and her mother had taken her from Japan to western coast of North America to visit her father who had just put to port for some shore leave. The Academy in San Francisco was amazing for the young girl to watch. That was when Lrohata pressed medication Nyoko was waiting for against her neck sedating her muscles and when the medication finally took effect a few moments after she loss sensation from her arms, and feet. With the nurses slipped Nyoko into a comfortable pose and pulled the covers up over her shoulder. Nyoko shut her narrow Asian eyes and just rested.
The medication had weird effects on her dreams she was back at that day. The day when she first saw the campus of Starfleet Academy, the two stepped off the shuttle ride and viewed all the cadets in uniforms mulling about. The Ensign assigned to escort them from the civilian parking to the ocean side landing strips from shuttles arriving from space. The two mothers and daughter stood now in the warm and mild Californian air overlooking the Pacific Ocean waiting patiently.
Little Nyoko only 8 years old, dressed in children’s tunic and wore a nice large sun hat to keep the sun from her face to a point where only her jet black cascaded from under the hat and down her shoulders. She stood barely as tall as her mother’s hip and her hands on the sea wall not sure what exactly she was looking for. She looked up to her mother now with confusion in her smooth and youthful asian face. And spoke in her native earth Japanese tongue to her mother. “Where is papa?” she asked so insolently.
Her mother looked to her side and responded in two short Japanese words, “patients, Nyoko dear.” And in a pout the eight year old turned and looked back out at the ocean.
Finally what Nyoko was looking for didn’t come out from the horizon but from space. A Starfleet shuttle craft was making planet fall. White stream of cloud trailed from high above them and imminently the two traced its path with their eyes. Little Nyoko couldn’t help but to light up in wonder. The shuttle finally seem to gain some control and it zipped left and right, over and about in a wonderful display of flight skill and then the shuttle came to land on the landing pad.
Nyoko ran to the hatch with excitement and for the first time in she saw her father in person instead of on a computer screen. He picked her up superman fashion and swung her around the two had their reunion and finally his wife Ayoko came over smiled to the two. Right before Nyoko was totally in slumber she hear fathers words, “Hey Nyoko! Your gonna help your dad fly this thing?”

Little Nyoko stepped on to her father’s shuttle craft and for the first time of life she was peering into her father’s work. Her mother as well stepped onboard and took a seat behind the front to pilot chairs comfortable. Her father sat in front of the main controls and then patted the seat next to him for Nyoko to come and sit.
Nyoko sat down just as her father told her too. Her eyes were wide (as wide as asian eyes could get), at all the touch consoles layed out around herself and her father. Some buttons where blue, others where red, and orange all shapped in a specific manner. She had no clue with any of it does but when she looked over at her father as he worked the buttons with little problem. Hero worship became to overwhelme her. In that although she had no idea how to work those controls, her father did, and he probably had mastered them. She wanted to learn them so egarely all she could do was ask question after question.
“Daddy, how do you know which one to press?”
“What does this blue one do?”
“Which ones turn it on and off?”
“Does mommy know how to work this too?”
“Can this spaceship go fast?”
“How fast?”
“Where are we going to go in this?”
And just about after 10th, or maybe even 12th question from his little girl he smiled over to her tapped his lip indicating her to quiet down.
“Now Nyoko-chung, I’m going to teach you a little so you can help me. Alright?” Her father asked.
Nyoko’s eyes lit up and she nodded anxiously!
“I just want you to hit, this button, and this button, and this one. When I tell you, can you remember that Nyoko?”
“Hai!” she responded.
Her father chuckled and with a few strokes of the flat touch panels that operated the shuttle. The craft was beginning to power up and getting ready for take off. Her father nodded to Nyoko and her small fingers tapped each button in as she was instructed resulting in the landing closing the door hatch, retracting the landing gear, and clearing setting the shuttle’s status for take off. From there on her father took the controls and flew the shuttle upwards into the blue sky and beyond.
The ride was rather smooth; aside for some slight turbines when they cut threw the earth’s jet stream. Then it happen, almost without warning. The wild blue sky started to fade away and be replaced by an eternal darkess with little twinkling dots. Nyoko for the first time had left earth behind. Wowed by the experience she looked at her dad and smiled so happy.
Her mother sitting so quietly in the back simply watched her daughter’s expressions. She too smiled that even though her father was away for five years. The two were sharing an experience that the will both remember for the rest of there lives. The shuttle came up out of the Earth’s atmosphere and there Nyoko saw all the space stations, and sturcutres floating in space. Something became clear to Nyoko, it was just as busy up here as anywhere else in the world. The shuttle didn’t fly towards the field of construction docks, and the earth spacedock. They flew away from all that and as the sun peered over the earth in a glare, Nyoko a large spaceship. A sovereign class starship and it’s sizes was so enormous that it blew Nyoko’s mind.
As they close, closer, and closer, to come to land in the back docking bay of the ship. She was still in dazzled awe that her father came from outer space, picked her and her mom up, and flew them back to outer space, to land on starship that to civilians were almost like fables when considering there day to day lives. Once landed the crews moved quickly to scureing the shuttle and Honda family disembarked. Her dad showed her all around the ship and the two walked for hours. Her mother following along silently the entire time, and when walking threw the mazy halls of the starship was about to be too much for little Nyoko. She latterly bumped into the thigh of a very important man.
Her father pulled his daughter back at once and saluted quickly and held his daughter in place in front of him by placeing one hand on her shoulder and the other behind his back.
“Sir!” Nyoko’s father said firmly.
Nyoko was confused to what was going on. She looked of to her mother seeking he answers and she simply tapped her lip indicating Nyoko to be quiet. Nyoko did just that. She looked up at the man who was way older then her father who was dressed in the same uniform with the same color gray shoulders, and red collar. The only difference was that her father had three little cicle pins in his, and the man she had crashed into had four. Though no amount of understand could have made that detail clear to Nyoko at this age. She did gather that from her mother and father’s reactions this man was important.
The captain and his first officer spoke back and forth and the conversation turned to Nyoko. The eight year old girl stood there in absolute silence just as her mother suggested to her prior. And the captain took special notice I Nyoko bending down to shake her hand and to tell her how wonderful of a pilot he was, and that she should be proud. Nyoko simply nodded.
“Captain? Could Nyoko see the bridge before they return to Earth?” Nyoko’s father asked.
“Well Commander,” the captain started and then paused a moment in thought.
Nyoko looked back and forth between the two, and finally the captain gave his second half of the sentence.
“Only officers are really allowed to be on the bridge. Your daughter isn’t an officer.” The captain said with a smile.
Nyoko’s father only smiled and he undid one of his pips and pushed pinned it to Nyoko’s Callor. Then he gave a salute to his daughter.
“Honoree Ensign Honda, and Lt Honda are reporting for duty captain,” her father said in a joke. The captain could only laugh and he nodded. Looking to Nyoko smileing at the light hearted atmosphere between the captain and his commander.
They all went to the bridge and Nyoko was able to see what her father’s work place really was like. When she arrived on the bridge there was a lot of computer noise and tweeks, and chimes. It was very fascinating especially to see all the other officers in the same uniform as her father. Once on the bridge the Captain announced an attention on deck. All the officers immediately stopped what they were doing. Little Nyoko was so impressed by the power that one man commanded among the others. It was all so mystical to her.
“I’d like to introduce you to Honoree Ensign Honda, she’ll be with be visiting the bridge today.” The captain said and the entire bridge staff cooed and awed at how cute the starship’s first officer’s daughter was. The next 10 mins Nyoko was the center of attention as all the officers had to have a chance to meet her. Some shook her hand, others pinched her cheek and by the time that was all over. Little Nyoko had enough. All she wanted to do was hide behind mommy.
After the bridge tour and everyone said there good byes, it became clear that Nyoko’s trip to her father’s ship he worked on was coming to an end. The family assembled in transporter room where Nyoko stood quietly. Her mother and father kissed and embraced each other spoke softly to one another in Japanese and all the while Nyoko examined the strange cove with six white pads. Then her father took Nyoko’s hand and walked her onto one of the pads.
“I love you, Nyoko and I hope today you have an understanding why your father is always away.” He spoke to her. She nodded and tears started to swell up in her eyes. She didn’t understand what was going to happen next but she knew in her heart that her father was going away again for long time.
“I always miss you and your mom, I can’t wait to see you two again,” he continued explaining to her. Nyoko was in tears now clinging to her fathers neck, she didn’t want to go anywhere she wanted to stay, she wanted to be honoree ensign Honda. Then her father pealed his daughters cling from around his neck and kissed her on the forehead.
“Won’t be too long Nyoko, now be a good girl.”
And he stood back off the transport pad and left his wife and daughter on individual pads. Before Nyoko would jump off the transporter pad, she and her mother were whooshed away as the chief energized the transporter. The feeling was surreal for Nyoko, she felt the coldness of space, then the warmth of earth and suddenly she was in the living room of her home in Japan.
She was hugged by her mother and Nyoko cried. The entire day trip was awesome beyond belief. She saw her father, she rode co-pilot with him into space on a shuttle, she walked around his ship saw all the various sections, met the captain, as well as his coworkers, visited the bridge, and she was beamed back to earth right in the spot she woke up early this morning at.
Nyoko probably would have cried for hours after her father’s fairwell if it wasn’t for her mother who pointed out to Nyoko that she was still honoree ensign. Her father never took back the single pip, and threw the years while her father was on space assignment she treasured that little gold round pin.
Nyoko stared into that pin and a blinding light came from it, so bright that she was forced to shut her eyes.
Then a voice she heared, "Lt Commander Honda? Can you hear me."
Finally Nyoko's vision came too and she saw Lrohata standing above here with a small flash light shining it in her eyes. She was awake and in her Sickbay. The memories of her father, and her first starfleet experience just a dream.
