7.) What is your basic character concept & history? One of the few survivors of a mostly assimilated alien race with a biological attenuation to electromagnetic waves. Joined Starfleet to pay back the rescuers of his people and puts his natural talents to work as a helm officer.
8.) Please give a little background about this character. Arathir was born and raised on Volym, a cold terrestrial world housing a civilization bordering the edge of warp spaceflight technology. The planet was unfortunately in the ruinous pathway of the Borg collective, which sought to assimilate the inhabitants of Volym in order to acquire their ability to 'hear' electromagnetic waves of certain frequencies. Only a teenager at the time, Arathir was shuffled onto a lunar expedition probe by his father, an astrophysicist by career, and launched into orbit in a desperate attempt to escape the onslaught. Given that the Borg had made such an attack, Starfleet saw the Prime Directive no longer jeopardized by their interference and rescued what few Volymians they could.
As the only survivor of his family and a member of a race now only numbering in the low thousands, Arathir dedicated his newfound lease on life to giving back to the cause that saved him; to Starfleet, in the hopes that one day he could be the deciding factor between the survival of an innocent people and certain destruction.
Volymians are a warm-blooded mammalian species that tamed the tundra world of Volym. They typically stand of similar build to humans, if not a touch shorter. Volymian hair is almost exclusively blue-black in color, though some rare cases of purple-tinged hair have been documented. Volymian blood is pale blue in color, giving their skin a similar pigmentation.
The Volymians, having evolved in an environment with often low visibility due to snowstorms, developed a natural ability to discern electromagnetic waves emitted by slightly radioactive minerals in their environment in order to find landmarks and other survival essentials. Their hearing developed rapidly as well. As they became civilized, this ability progressed in an artistic manner; the average Volymian has a perfect sense of pitch, granting them a preternatural sense for composing harmonies and brilliant musical pieces. This ability is not all-encompassing; Volymians are not able to detect the high extremes of the electromagnetic spectrum. Their perception falls just short of 'hearing' ultraviolet rays.
