Through The Window
A story based on events in the E-V 819 System
Crewman Novem put his hand on the cool surface of the window and looked out into the blackness. The support station in high orbit above Earth gave a commanding view of the blue planet and its major satellite, Starbase 01, or Spacedock. But he wasn't looking at the planet, but the drydocks glittering with their bright lights and their busy repair crews. A few were empty, but one in particular was occupied.
"Hey Bron." his roommate in the station hospital whispered. "What ya lookin at?"
He didn't turn, just replied with a quiet voice. "I wonder if she's gonna fly again, Harvey?"
Harvey Yan put a hand on his pals shoulder. "They'll do the best they can, but she got pretty banged up."
The Europa floated in the drydock with mooring lines keeping her stationary. Her hull, those parts of it that were not blasted, showed no lights. Her core was offline. Her warp nacelles had been removed and her saucer section looked like someone had taken a large slice of a cake from her. The full extent of her scars were still being assessed. Novem had asked to get updates of her, but his rank didn't hold much weight with the medical staff here. He's 'have to just sit and wait'
It seemed a cruel punishment to get a window seat of her floating out there with her hull so carved up. His memory of the battle was still muddled but, for now he hoped the Europa would pull through. He'd enquired about his captain and that of his crewmates. The Varina had taken some of them, as had the Aurora. The staff only said they would check on them soon, and that he shouldn't worry because they were getting the best treatment. The Yoshimoto had gotten beaten up too, she looked like she'd been drop kicked around the system a few times. Lt Cmdr Orkney and Lt Cmdr Honda had battled so fiercely, even when the Europa was crippled and drifting, unable to help.
"My legs hurt." Bron said, and wobbled back to the bed. He drank some water and laid back. "Harv.. the fires. The plasma fires. The bastard Klingons knew we were out of action and they STILL FIRED ON US!" He clenched his teeth as pain shot up his legs.
"Hey Bron... just rest ok?", his Chinese friend called out. "Man.. the Klinks got it worse, they burned and vaporised."
"Did they...? Did they really get it worse Harv? Some of the seriously injured don't have a face anymore." he'd not looked at Harvey as he spoke. He just looked out at the Europa.
((Its short, but not finished at all. I just wanted to get an idea down ))
