Five seconds!
Brace for impact!
Three!
The wave impacted us with a great jolt. When I came too, the bridge was a mess, consoles blown out, wires and circuitry hung from the ceiling, smoke billowed out from where a panel used to be. The captain was still gathering herself as she crawled to the 1st officer's side to check his vitals, he was dead.
Report!
Hull breach deck 14, com lines to engineering are down! Trying to reestablish.
Repair crews seal off hull breach on deck 14!
Aye captain.
Casualty reports are coming in... sick bay is not responding.
Bridge to sick bay, Doctor can you hear me?
Paris! hows Sadding?
She's dead.
Captain there's something out there.
I need a better description then that mister Kim!
I... dunno, I'm reading I'm not sure what I'm reading!
Can you get the view screen operational?
I'm trying.
The view screen hummed to life, static at first then the image cleared up to reveal some sort of strange array.
Captain, if these sensors are working, we're over 70,000 light years from where we were. We're on the other side of the galaxy.
The tubolift doors opened and two men steeped out with a stretcher, they immediate went to the first injured crewman, gingerly placed her on the stretcher and headed for the door, the captain patting one of them on the back of the shoulder as they passed.
I'm not reading any life signs on the Maquis ship.
What about on that... that array?
Our sensors cant penetrate it.
Any idea what those pulses are that are coming from it mister Kim?
Massive bursts of raydeon energy, they seem to be directed at a nearby g-type star system.
Try hailing the array.
Engineering to bridge, We have severe damage the chief's dead. Possibility of a warp core breach!
Secure all engineering systems, I'm on my way!
No response from the array.
Ensign get down to sick bay see whats going on, Mister Rollins the bridge is yours.
Aye captain.
It was then I turned to see Harry Kim moving toward the turbo lift, I dashed after him and told him to wait for me. When we got down to sick bay the first thing we saw was fire and sparks bursting out of a console on the wall, Harry grabbed a fire suppression unit and I checked the nurse and doctor for vitals with my tricorder. They were both gone.
They must have been right next to that console when it exploded!
All right enough of the theatrics! Exclaimed ensign Ehazi Corspa. I can't even follow who is saying what, you are just reading off the dialogue, and you are a horrid actor by the way.
Hey you gave me this book. I replied. "The Odyssey That Was The Voyager Missions" by Thomas Paris, on Isolinear chip.
She scoffed, Yeah, the one sided stories of valor and heroism as told by the hot head helmsman! I figured you would love it, fly boy.
I laughed, she knows me so well. Thank you Ehazi, I'm gonna read these every time I get off duty.
Not every time R.J. you and I have a score to settle on the holodeck, I still want a rematch for that basket ball game.
Oh you'll get that rematch, you can bet your blue butt on that, I replied with a smirk.
Alright well I should get to bed and so should you, try not to stay up all night reading, she said with a slight sigh as she rose to her feet and headed for the door. As usual she bumped shoulders with me and as I turned about to watch her leave she matched my maneuver, turning to keep her eyes on me as she circle stepped out of my quarters, her antennae bending forward slightly. She'd done it a thousand times before, I don't think she's ever left a room with out keeping her eyes on me from the day we met at the academy. I could not help but chuckle at the memory of that day.
Data pad in hand I walked over and placed it on my bed. As I undressed I thought back to my first day on this ship, The Starship Phobetor, what kind of a name is that you might ask, I know I did. Greek according to the ensign science nerd that over heard me talking to myself as I walked out of the transporter room.
Phobetor, in Greek mythology he was the prince of nightmares, son of Morpheus the king of the dream world.
Prince of nightmares eh? Why would they name a Miranda class vessel after something like that. I had made the mistake of wondering that out loud.
The ensign jabbered on, I stopped paying attention. It was a boring first day, heck the past month since I got this assignment has been nothing but boredom.
I collapsed into my mattress and resumed where I left off on the data pad. I had just gotten to the part where Voyager was in combat with a species call the Kazon, I remember wondering to myself, if it would ever get exciting around here. Then the world turned upside down. I remember a massive shock that threw me out of bed and into the wall. The lights went out for a moment and when they came back we were at red alert.
As the vintage warning rang in my ears I noticed I was floating. What ever hit us had knocked out the internal inertial dampeners and the artificial gravity. In arms reach in front of me where my pants, anticipating the potential for my need for them in the near future I snatched them and put them on. As I was pulling them up I looked out the window I could see the ship was rolling and I could see debris drifting out from us, then it came into view. A Negh'Var. I thought maybe we collided, or there was some kind of accident and they were just in the area. Then they pulled around, an ominous red glow emanating from their photon launcher. The torpedo came gliding strait for me, I threw my arms up in front of me as tho that would save me and then... A slight rocking and a low thud, I was still alive. I looked up to see a blue shimmer between me and my would be Klingon murderers. They got the shields up I see, I said to myself.
The alarm's ringing ended and the Captain's voice came over the ship's intercom, "All hands, be advised gravity is coming back online".
Baawh! The floor knocked the wind out of me. The com klaxon sounded followed by the captain's voice again, Ensign Sullivan report to the bridge, we need you up here.
I rolled over and with a grunt acknowledged my orders. When I got to the bridge I noticed the body of what was Alpha shift's helmsman, I'm not a doctor but I could tell his neck was broken, necks don't bend the way his was. Another crewman was unconscious but breathing, a medic was treating another man's concussion, I relieved the attending crewman of his seat at the con.
Mr. Sullivan move us into a defensive posture, we need to hold out against them till help arrives.
Aye sir, I'm moving us to their worst possible firing arc on their starboard side. Disruptor fire burst forth pelting our shields relentlessly. Our Engineering officer reported, Starboard shields down to 55%. Another barrage rocked the ship. Shields are failing! They're turning to put us in line for a torpedo barrage! My hands floated across the console, coaxing the rusty old slug of a ship to pull us out of the immediate danger and presenting them with a new shield face. Sir we are losing speed! I exclaimed. we are losing power to the engines, I cant maneuver fast enough to counter them!
A comm klaxon sounded, Engineering to Bridge, we lost an EPS conduit to an overload on deck 6, I can maintain power to the engines but at the cost of weapons. You'll have to pick when when you want what Captain. Acknowledged Engineering, the captain responded in his gruff manor, anyone have some suggestions?
Lt. Commander Martinique, our chief science officer, turned to the Captain with a mixed look of hope, concern, and desperation.
Sir! I think I can use our deflector array to confuse the enemy's targeting sensors, it wouldn't give us enough time to escape but we may be able to give us time to get into an offensive posture, maybe we can buy some time so we can uh... buy some more time, at that she bit her thumb nail and continued to stare at the captain with a look of pure concern now. The captain shifted in his chair lifting his knuckle to lip then pulling it away, Do it! Engineering I'm going to need engine power a little while longer, Ensign Sullivan swing us around so we can target the superstructure on their aft from in front and just above them, if we take out their rear photon launchers we might have a chance.
I stumbled with my response, S-Sir, you want me to put the ship in front of them?!?! Can I at least get a head start to the escape pod?
The captain snapped back, Ensign you will comply or it will be the last thing you do as a member of Starfleet.
Aye Sir! I shouted back at the top of my lungs. Although I have a feeling that either way it will be the last thing I do. I had the foresight not to say that part out loud.
I set to bringing us about as Martinique jammed the enemy targeting sensors. The enemy's disruptors continued to fire blindly in all directions, we were almost invisible till they could compensate.
Sir we are in position, I am locking weapons just below the super structure, exclaimed the tactical officer. I am awaiting the power transfer from engines to weapons, I am going to overload the forward array, we will have just one shot at this.
Bridge to engineering, barked the captain. I need that weapon power now! The voice over the com informed him he would have it in three seconds. Moments later the tactical officer's fingers struck three times on his console in rapid succession. A high intensity beam lashed out from our forward array, tearing down the Negh'Var's bow shields and burning out our phasers. Not a second later two photon torpedoes roared out of our launcher, they buried themselves in the Klingon hull. Fire wretched itself out from all sides below the superstructure. Engineering diverted power back to the engines after our attack. Impulse was slowly coming back online as the science officer shouted, They have compensated for our interference, they are reacquiring us sir!
Get us out of here, maximum impulse mister Sullivan, ordered the captain.
I glided the Phobetor over the wounded Klingon warship as their rear Disruptor array opened fire, chipping away at our aft shielding. 85 percent, 60 percent, 35 percent, shields failing! A Disruptor beam cut into impulse engine two destroying it outright. I shielded my eyes as sparks shot from the corner of my console. Another console burst into flames on the far side of the bridge, the crewman closest to it diving for cover, his right arm and back being burned and cut from flying debris.
Report! Demanded the captain.
We've lost Impulse engine two, someone replied. Bam bam bam, more disruptor beams rocked the ship, cutting and gouging at the hull. Lights dimmed, consoles flickered, sparks flew and smoke billowed up in puffs.
I'm trying to present our port shield to them, they are trying to turn to face us captain, I don't think I can out maneuver them this time! I cried out. When they bring their forward launchers to bare on us we are done sir! I turned to face him, he was wiping blood from his forehead, I hadn't noticed him being cut by the flying debris. More explosions rocked the ship, reports of hull breaches and systems failures continued to ring out. I suppose it would have been the appropriate time to give a speech to the effect of having been proud to serve and die under his service or some thing, If I hadn't been about to die on such a pathetic ship my first month in the fleet.
Lt. Commander Martinique interrupted my thoughts with an upbeat chirpy voice. Sir! I'm detecting another ship dropping out of warp, it's the Khitomer!
She was majestic, beautiful, graceful, a sight to behold for sure. The Sovereign class cruiser swung between us and the Negh'Var and let loose a punishing barrage of phaser fire, four quantum torpedoes burst fourth in rapid succession from the Khitomer, they closed in with due purpose on their prey and tore into the warship and with a furious violence the enemy was obliterated. It was beautiful.
Hail the Khitomer, the captain ordered. Send them our thanks, maybe some day we can return the favor.
Sir the Khitomer has informed us that they can not stay to aid us in repairs, said the communications officer. There are reports coming in all over the neutral zone, the Klingons are invading the Archanis sector in force, they've declared full scale war sir.
The captain ordered the crew to care for the seriously wounded and carry out essential repairs to get us underway. After a few hours we set course for Starbase K7 to complete repairs, the com channels were filled with distress calls and battle reports. Last year the Klingons tried to reclaim the planet of Korvat but that incident had been resolved with out violence. Things have changed, their victory over the Gorn and their largely successful war of aggression against the Romulans has emboldened them and incited a blood lust in every Klingon warrior.
Brace for impact!
