Time: Early Fall, 2412
Place: Starfleet Academy
Cadet Ezri Tegan sat in the large leather chair, fidgeting awkwardly and obviously having some trouble focusing on the moment. Doctor Amanda Hathaway studied the cadet with a look of concern and skepticism. “Is there a problem cadet?” Amanda asked in a soft maternal tone.
Ezri gave Amanda a dear in headlights sort of look, “Can I go now?”
Amanda frowned, “When we are done here, you can go.” she responded.
Ezri stood up and turned to leave. Amanda blinked in confusion. “I didn't say we were done cadet,” she stated. Her tone betrayed a hint of annoyance.
Ezri turned back and blinked a few times, “oh you want to decide when we are done?”
Amanda had a blank expression on her face, “yeah, I do sort of outrank you, cadet.”
Ezri frowned, “I am still getting used to that rank thing they do around here. It seems like a bad idea that just leads to stupid people getting the power they should not have.” Ezri explained.
Amanda Shrugged, “I guess that is one danger of a hierarchical command structure.”
Ezri plopped back down in the big leather chair, “What are doing again?”
Amanda smiled, “Some people have raised some concerns about whether or not you are fit to be in Starfleet. I have been told to reevaluate you.
Ezri leaned back and folded her arms across her chest, looking indignant. “Well, that seems like a waste of time. I am the smartest person here.”
Amanda chuckled, “and, the most humble.”
Ezri looked terribly confused, “Who exactly is concerned. Was it Lieutenant Burke? I don't think she likes me much. She is always yelling at me.”
Amanda nods slowly, “Yeah, they do a lot of that during your first year at the academy. How does it make you feel?”
Ezri leans forward, “it makes me feel anxious. I wish they would stop.”
Amanda smiled, "I guess you did not really research what Starfleet Academy life was like before joining?"
Ezri shook her head, "No not really."
Amanda looked confused, "I am uncertain why you are here cadet."
Ezri shrugged, "where else do I have to go?" she responded, her tone a bit sad.
Amanda offered a sympathetic look, "That is a question I can't answer for you. But, maybe I can help you cope with life here better or maybe help you figure out where you should be, if not here."
Ezri again shrugged. Amanda was not entirely sure how to interpret that response.
