Marcus had dozed off on the couch; for how long, he couldn’t quite say. He stretched a bit and sat up, running his hands across his face. His conversation with Nyzaria still rang shrilly in his ears; the identity of the Chosen, or at least her people’s version of it, and more alarmingly that her people’s intentions were to turn the science team they had rescued from the grove into Veracysium. Or… Elder Obsidian, or Dusk Tears, or whatever. He groaned softly. Perhaps he had overreacted, after all he’d known that they had planned to execute the science team, but that feeling of utter horror and disgust still left a soured taste in the back of his throat.
Just then, there was a chime at his door, followed by that lovely voice in a soft and somber tone. “Marcus?”
He didn’t answer right away, scratching his beard lightly before he responded. “Come in, Nyzaria.”
The doors parted, and there she was; the tall, willowy image of perfection, clad in the blue gown that he’d given her some weeks back. He couldn’t help but smile gently, getting up out of his seat.
“Marcus… I’m sorry I upset you...” she began, but he closed the gap between them and took her hand, leading her inside all the way so the door would shut behind her.
“No, I’m sorry I overreacted. I was… taken aback, I guess you can say,” he murmured, running his hands along her arms. “I asked, after all, and you were only answering.”
A lovely smile graced her face. “It’s okay, though… I think I’ve found a way to make this work.” She leaned in to kiss him, and he gladly returned it. There was more force to it than he was used to, and when their lips parted his head was swimming with her venom once more.
“What do you mean?” he managed to ask. He stumbled slightly, and Nyzaria caught him in her deceptively strong arms.
“Shh, my dear, sweet Marcus… don’t fret.” Marcus’ body gave a full shudder, and when he opened his mouth to answer no words came out; his tongue had liquefied into a viscous red substance that dribbled out onto the floor. He looked down in utter horror as he started to cough viciously, his teeth falling from his mouth to bubble and dissolve in the blight.
“You’ll be with the goddess soon...” Nyzaria whispered as she stroked his hair. Marcus gave a guttural cry of agony as his knees liquefied under him, his fingers melting away before his very eyes. “And then we can be together...”
“Forever...”
Marcus snapped awake with a start, immediately looking down at his hands and then checking his mouth. Finding everything still there, he lurched up and headed into the bathroom, turning on the sink and splashing his face liberally. He panted as he leaned on the basin, looking up at his visage in the mirror, and then promptly staggered over to release the contents of his stomach into the toilet.
Once he was done he sniffed sharply, rinsing his mouth with a cup of water and going to lean against the wall. “What the fuck...” he whispered to himself under his breath, his hands shaking as he forced himself to calm his breathing.
