TO: Science and Medical department leads of the 22nd Mobile Fleet
CC: Captain Talia zh'Kor, Commanding Officer, U.S.S. Adagio NCC-99691-B / Project Magellan Command
FROM: Lieutenant Sereya Eren, Science Officer, U.S.S. Adagio NCC-99691-B
SUBJECT: Project Magellan: Subproject GALAPAGOS
Since arriving in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we’ve collectively met a number of species that were present for the last war against the Dark approximately two million years ago. However, records held by Eirene on the Citadel indicate that for a number of these species, little to no evolutionary progress has occurred in all that time. While that is not completely unheard of for certain life forms whose environments remain more or less static, it is highly anomalous in this instance; particularly for space-faring species and those whose environments were drastically changed during the last war.
While we lack knowledge of what has caused this, we currently theorise that this is the result of the Dark’s quest for True Order in greatly limiting the number of mutations in the offspring of certain species to prevent the growth and change that organic life naturally progresses toward, reigning in the chaos that birthed life in the first place.
Since presenting this theory, I have been tasked by Captain Talia zh’Kor and sanctioned by Project Magellan to announce Subproject Galapagos. My own specialty lies in astronomy rather than biology, and so I hope to pull on the collective wisdom of our science and medical forces in this fleet to properly and thoroughly carry out this assignment.
To that end, our official mission parameters are currently:
-To locate and identify populations in the Large Magellanic Cloud whose evolutionary progress has been artificially slowed or halted,
-To identify the external causes of the artificial evolutionary hold,
-To identify the impacts of genetic stagnation on these populations, and
-To identify the means to allow these populations to resume their natural evolutionary progression.
We have already identified the Bursali as one of the species impacted by this evolutionary hold, and are currently waiting a response from their embassy with our request for further examinations and tests.
An additional route that may be pursued lies in the Scyrthi, whose genetic mutilation by Apostates is well documented. The methods used to alter them in that manner and keep them from naturally overcoming their obstacles over thousands of generations may prove useful in identifying the process used to stunt other species’ growth.
I will keep this line of communication open for any questions, concerns, theories or contributions as the subproject progresses. Everyone who can spare their time and effort for this has my gratitude.
