As the sleek, battered and battle worn Banshee slipped into Citadel space, Liz stood leaning on the railing behind her command chair. Her insides burned deeply from the damaged she had still let go untreated, her CMO and his staff had been overloaded and overworked with her wounded and the hundreds of Imperium prisoners cum refugees she had taken aboard. In her mind, those aboard her ship were her first priority and they were seen to before she was. She let her eyes drift about the bridge to her crew...primarily her officers, those she had trusted the most from the Gigantes...to help her with the true mission of the Banshee, a mission that had been interrupted by the Tanausan invasion..
They looked as haggard and as tired as she felt, yet they remained stoically at their posts as their ship finally returned to a friendly port for the first time since the Christmas season...she was so very proud of each and every one that had made it to this point, as proud of the ones who had laid down their lives ... to fight in the dark...so others may live in the light..
So here they were...coming home with not only the surviving prisoners of the USS Anhui ... but her friend and fellow Captain, Captain Arfacio of the Enigma...
"Caritha" Liz whispered to herself. She did not evny the hell she knew her friend would place herself in..the survivors guilt that awaited her...Something Liz knew all too well.
She knew Scream would've heard her and she could feel the helmet turn to look at her when .... they all heard it...a voice that had been so quiet...Artesia ...
... SANG ...
As the unseen Banshee flew by the dark and silent gateway...a gateway that lead them all here to this desolete galaxy, what seemed so very long ago..a gateway darkened for some reason..that might allow them to go home...yet let nothing to come through to help...seemed almost asleep since the invasion had begun. Months of awakenings ..yet silence in its operation...her operation Liz reminded herself...yet as the Banshee passed her... her angelic voice seemed to erupt and each over all of them...
Liz stirred some as she saw her crew react and respond all around the bridge, from each subspace channel..in their own minds, in their own hearts as the Banshee and her brave crew ferried the rescued officers and its cargo of recently freed Imperium prisoners passed the ancient artifact she ...sang...
The massive gateway activated and in its fluidic center...out poured its wonderous sapphire like glow that bathed the bridge and the surrounding area up like a small star blazing in the night...
Liz looked over to Cat to see if the gateway now registered passage to the Milky Way and to home once more..only for Cat to shake her head...nothing in that regard had changed ...yet..Artesia sang...
She sang.
She was heralding the arrival of the Banshee and her precious cargo, as if to let everyone aboard know, No Liz thought, Artesia was letting everyone here know, that they were not alone, she was still here and as long as she was...
... there was hope.
Liz smirked, letting even her own cynical heart embrace this notion.
There was always still hope.
She nodded to El who sat at the helm. "Taken us into transporter range Ellie gal...XO alert the station to receive our passengers ... refugees and survivors all."
"We will then move to dock in our usual docking bay." She looked at El. "Maintain the cloak and lets see these people home safe and sound."
She found herself smiling as she issued her orders to the harmony of their Ethereal hostess' song. She closed her eyes and allowed herself to embrace the fullness of the song as her crew worked to carry out their last orders prior to some much earned shore leave.
She .. smiled as Artesia sang on through the eternal night.
