Time: Some unspecified time in the past.
Place: An unspecified location in the Azure Nebula.
The Azure Nebula was a class 11 nebula found on the border in the Beta Quadrant, between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. It was primarily composed of oxygen and argon, with traces of theta-xenon, fluorine, and sirillium. It was here that cadet Ezri Tegan parked her warp shuttle, the Deimos. It was true that technically it was not her shuttle. The spacecraft was procured by Starfleet and by means of creative accounting it disappeared from Starfleet records and entered the service of Project Salvation. Then through more creative accounting Ezri made it disappear from Project Salvation records and it found its way into her hands.
Now the computer on board the shuttle Deimos maintained its position inside the nebula while Ezri completed her preparation. The RCS thrusters fired from time to time to compensate for drift. Ezri was in the aft compartment making final adjustments to the portable fusion reactor that would be powering her folded-space transporter device. As she worked she glanced over at a nearby wall display. The image on the screen was the Klingon world called Boreth.
Boreth was an inhabited class M world in the Boreth system. Located in the Beta Quadrant some 15 light years from her current position. It was also the site of the Boreth Monastery, dedicated to Kahless the Unforgettable and a very sacred place to the Klingons. It was also a place Ezri was making plans to steal from. Her objective was one of the time crystals, or poH qut as the Klingons called them. These crystals are rare minerals with a non-equilibrium matter state, and they are unfortunately unique to Boreth. Ezri was not proud of the fact that she was about a desecrate a Klingon holy place, but she needed the crystal for her time machine.
Ezri closed the access panel on the generator and initiated the power-up sequence. "Computer begins a class three diagnostic on the space-fold generator," she stated.
"Initiating class three diagnostic." the computer responded.
Ezri went to get suited up. The space-fold transportation process was not exactly safe. Radiation from the space-fold process made changes to humanoid DNA. The changes were cumulative and over time would prove fatal. Ezri hoped the EVA suit would provide some protection and if all went well should only need to use the device two times. One for the trip to Boreth and another for the trip back. It was a risk, but the prize she was after was worth that risk and more.
