Time: The Present
Place: An observation deck on board the Citadel space station.
Members of the Manta science team gather together for a very special 'team meeting' to say goodbye to fallen comrades. Ezri knelt next to a holographic projector stand making final adjustments to the images of Lieutenant JG Francoise Helmkamp and Lieutenant JG Mei Lu Wuyang, the two members of their team that did not survive. The holograms were there so the two could be with them, at least in spirit, for one last team meeting.
Lieutenant JG Siin Inozlo and Ensign Ernie Hauser waited patiently as Ezri worked. Both officers looked much better than the last time Ezri saw them in the medical ward. Siin no longer required a wheelchair to get around and Ernie looked completely healed, well physically anyway.
Ezri shut off her multi-tool and stood up, "they're perfect." she said then she looked at the others. "I guess we can all take turns saying something." Ezri paused and looked at Dacie. "You didn't have time to get to know them, so you don't really need to say anything. Unless you really want to."
Siin Inozlo nodded slowly, "You want to go first boss?" she asked Ezri.
Ezri took a deep breath, "Yeah, I should." she said looking at the holograms. "You never seem to appreciate how much a person means to you until they are gone." Ezri began, then paused to sigh sadly. "I saw both of them regularly at team meetings and Frannie was usually my beta shift relief at sensor ops. I wish now that I had spent more time with them. But, wishing doesn't make things happen. I was always on Alpha shift sensor ops because I was the chief science officer. That never changed even after I was no longer chief. But, Frannie was always the better sensor operator. I mean she never blew up a sensor console." Ezri paused at the light chuckles coming from the other officers. "Mei Lu she kept to herself almost as much as I do. But, I do know she was really good at three-dimensional chess. We played a couple of times and she beat me both times. I always thought I would have time to practice and get good enough to win for once. But I guess not now." Ezri paused and looked at the holograms. "I will miss you both," she said to the holograms with tears in her eyes.
After a few moments, she turned to the surviving members of the team. "I am sorry I let this happen. I was not prepared. I should have protected you guys." she told them all sadly. The others just looked surprised.
Siin Inozlo went and hugged the Trill, "It's not your fault. They caught the whole ship off guard. There was nothing anyone could do."
"It won't happen again," Ezri vowed.
