1.) What is your user handle? Thelin@Solardream
2.) What time zone are you in? PST
3.) How many hours do you play a week? 20+
4.) What are your typical play times; (Days and Times)? Sunday to Friday usually anywhere in–between 1000 to 1900
5.) What is your age? 32
6.) Are you a boy or girl? Boy
7.) Are you an active forum user? (Highly recommend that you are.) Not really in terms of posting, but I do check forums every other day at least.
8.) Do you like to write Stories, Log Entries or Design LCARs jpegs? I don’t know anything about graphics, but I do reckon I can write. However I wouldn’t write daily, as I have other things to do heh.
9.) Are you willing to work with Game Masters as an authority over storylines? Of course. Without a GM it’s too free-form and tends to devolve. (I play Tabletop RPG’s still as well.)
10.) Are you subscribed to the Daedalus OOC Channel? Not at the moment, but I would if I need to.
11.) What kind of subscription do you currently have? (Optional) Lifetime. I’m here for the duration.
12.) How did you hear about us? The STO Starbase One Forums.
13.) Are you willing and able to put our guilds information in your Character Bio? Hope this isn’t rude, but um...why? A fleet is listed on top of your name/ship, so that should be quite enough. The bio should be for your characters details, not as an advert; hence why it’s called a Biography. If anyone’s interested they can simply Google/Bing/whatever the fleet name eh.
14.) Do you understand the Activity Policy? Affirmative.
15.) What is the best way to contact you? E-mail usually.
Part B: Role Playing Experience Questions
1.) What does the Term "IC-OOC Separation” mean to you? In Character and Out Of Character. In character is what my fictional persona is saying/doing and Out of character is what I, the player is saying/doing.
2.) What is the difference between the term Player and Character? The Player is the person behind the character; i.e. my real self. The Character is the fictional persona that I am portraying in the game.
3.) What is Meta-gaming? Basically it’s using out of character knowledge that the character would never know or have access to.
4.) What are Action Brackets? (:: :: | - - |* *| ) It’s basically a shortcut to describe an action with words. I.e.: *shakes his head in dismay*, means my character just shook his head as a reaction to an event.
5.) How long have you been playing Star Trek Online? One year. ^_^
6.) How long have you role played in general? Since I was 12. I started with AD&D, and have played Rifts, D&D (3.0/.5), Star Wars (d6/Saga), Pathfinder, Savage Worlds settings, Warhammer Fantasy (2nd/3rd), Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/Deathwatch, Star Trek (LUG/Coda), Dragon Age, Eclipse Phase and Firefly/Battlestar Galactica. I was an ‘old school’, Star Trek PBeM (play by e-mail) player in two fleets, and was an XO at one point on a sim. Writing those stories was fun, and I had honestly wished this game had been more like the Perpetual vision of the game with a sim in mind.
7.) What was your last role playing experience? Still RPing with three groups Thursday to Saturday.
8.) What are your expectations of this fleet? Most of the ‘fleets’ here, do little since the game is so fragmented into zones, and everyone is the Captain who shoots everything mentality. I’d like to be with people who actually know the series, and like Star Trek, rather than just random players who are playing a new game and don’t know the different between TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT. Plus I’d be keen to have a character, and not be referred to as a ‘toon’. Bleh.
9.) What will you bring to this fleet? Mostly just my experiences with Star Trek simming, and roleplaying in general. I’m rather avid on the ‘proper’ Starfleet experience (for one…there’s no saluting [raising your hand to your head] in Starfleet…show me one episode where they did that, ever, and I’ll give in.) I’m a current Army National Guardsman so I take the hierarchy and chain of command to heart as well as knowing that these aren’t civilians we’re playing. They had training, and work together as a team.
10.) How do you feel about PVP? Meh. I’ve only been doing it for the accolades, and personally I could care less about it. PvP is nothing but number crunching, meta-gaming to me. After having done the real thing before, I don’t see much of a need to want to do it online.
11.) What difficulty do you typically play Star Trek Online on? Laugh if you want, but Normal. I’m more into knowing the story and relaxing then making things more trouble than it needs to be. Id’ do harder ones with a group, but not alone.
12.) Do you understand that all role playing is conducted locally? Yes. Mind you I may still run from place to place, but that’s just my character staying in shape.
13.) Do you know how to roll dice on Star Trek Online? (If so what is the command?) Actually no. I’ve never rolled a die on it before. I’d love to know.
14.) Do you have experience with Star Trek Role Play? Yes, yes and more yes. Besides having done some PBeM sims set in the 24th, 23rd and 22nd centuries, I played the Pencil and Paper versions with people before as well. Being a part of a crew is what I prefer, and love that about Star Trek Role-playing.
15.) Do you have alts in other fleets? (If so which fleet are we sharing you with?) Negative. My only ‘alt’ as it is, is my KDF character and he’s not in a fleet...unless this one has one there as well?
Section 02 – OOC Character Inquiry:
(All these questions are to be answered as player about the character you wish to play. It is best that you review daedalusomega.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rphandbook before answering.)
Part A: Character Request
1.) Character name? Thelin th’Zarath
2.) Character gender? Male
3.) Character race? Andorian
4.) Is your character a telepath? (Alien telepath characters are subjected by GM approval) No.
5.) Character class? Medical Officer (Dammit Jim, I’m a Doctor, not a Scientist.)
6.) Character STO level? Vice Admiral 1
7.) Select a fleet entry level rank. (Ensign, Jr Lieutenant, Lieutenant) Ensign
8.) What is your basic character concept & history? I’ve detailed it in my in-game character bio. Basically it’s this: Dominion War vet thrust 30 years into the future by an emergency near light speed drive, into yet another war and a changed galaxy.
9.) What kind of commission does your character have? (Enlisted, Petty Officer, or Officer) Warrant Actually. Originally he enlisted before the Dominion war, and was promoted up the ranks to gain a Warrant. (Wears the ‘Chief’ pip in character most times.) I realize this isn’t in keeping with your Enlisted/Officer grades, but I’d go for Petty Officer, if that’s close enough.
10.) Desired ship type of ship you'll be wish to be assigned too? (Tactical, Science, or Cruiser). Cruiser.
11.) Please give a little background about this character. I’ve adapted this character from my first PBeM one (Another Andorian heh, back in ‘98.) that I portrayed in the old Tango Fleet, by the name of Chemen Ashrand. He’s basically a strong and silent type, but I’ve made him a medic/nurse this time, since I wanted to show that he does actually care, even if he doesn’t know how to say it.
12.) Please describe what Merit System is. Pretty much a system to reward good roleplaying and active participation within the fleet.
13.) Has this character been enrolled in a fleet prior? Yes. My first one didn’t make it past beta (they were disappointed). My second one disbanded on me not two months into the game, my third went through a dictatorship and demanded a daily ‘tax’ and never really grouped or talked. Finally, my fourth just seemed to have players leave or never log on anymore.
14.) What are your aspirations for this character? Casual RP (I am just here to RP) or Competitive (I want to be an Admiral some day!) Casual. I’d just like to have some Star Trek in a Star Trek game, but I wouldn’t mind rising a little...I miss being a First Officer sometimes.
15.) What are strengths, weakness, and flaws in this character’s personality? Strengths: Single minded in purpose. Thelin tends to be focused on what’s important to him. He’s quite loyal though, especially once someone has proven themselves. Weakness: Thelin doesn’t understand any of the social cues that prevails the Human dominated Starfleet. Most things go over his head, and he tends to talk very little, or just to the point. Diplomacy is not his strong suit as he can be blunt and honest most times, unless he is comfortable around someone. Flaws: Thelin has Starfleet ingrained in him, and tends to ‘look down’ on Civilians as needing protection and address everyone simply by their rank, even off duty. Lastly, he strongly dislikes the Borg, having survived Wolf 359, and having now returned to find Cestus III under their domain.
Section 03 – IC Character’s Personnel Recorded:
(This section must be filled out and will serve as your official personnel Starfleet Record for this character as you play in our fleet. This is the section where you can become creative and illustrate to us the character you want to play in our RP Community. Be as detailed as you can with the character's past service. BE ADVISED: In-Character, Fleet Command has access to all your character's files... nothing is **Classified** to them.)
Name: Thelin th’Zarath
Age: 31
Species: Andorian
Gender: Male (Chan)
Rank: Chief Warrant Officer
Duty Assignment: Head Nurse
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 185 lbs.
Eyes: Purple
Hair: White
Description: Thelin has little to no facial tics as Humans know it. He can generally be seen with a neutral look upon him, while his antennae move slightly to and fro. He keeps in shape with a daily exercise routine, but still loves to eat. He keeps himself clean shaven and with short hair to keep out of his way.
Overview: Thelin usually has an usual presence around people (staying quiet but over-protective), but loves to keep behind the scenes. When he’s not helping with a patient’s treatment, he can be found in his quarters, the lounge or the holodeck.
Strengths and Weaknesses: Thelin looks at the Earth-made ‘Hippocratic Oath’ as a flaw. And never took it, basing it as ‘racist’ to non-Humans who weren’t ever informed about such a thing to begin with. He sees treating people and harming to be as Humans say, ‘Both sides of the same coin’. He’ll do his best to help, but he’ll defend and defeat any who interfere with that, as an Andorian would always do. Thelin is direct and to the point about things, usually charging straight into things, with little thought for the consequences afterwards. He’s more of a here-and-now person, then a cautious or dreamer type. He’s extremely weary of the Borg in general, but is open to using their technology against them, and finds a great pleasure in releasing people from the collectives clutches.
Hobbies and Interests: With an interest in history, Thelin tends to spend his time re-creating past events, sometimes from Earth and Andoria and sometimes from other planets and periods that interest him. Currently, he has a keen interest in 18th century Terran sailing ships and military naval history in general. He’s an avid collector of what Humans might call ‘knick-knacks’, and has his room full of crystals, old medals, statues, coins, and weapons from his travels to other worlds. He loves food, especially spicy dishes, and though he can’t cook, loves to watch and eat the results.
Quotes: “Even a stopped chrono gives the right time, twice a day.”
“Hmm.”
“I say what I mean, and mean what I say.”
“Applying a hypo is as much an art, as using a weapon is.”
History:
Growing up on Cestus III, Thelin had an advantage of being raised on a colony world shared with the Gorn. His clan kept many of the traditional Andorian ways, save for the dueling, as that was the reason they had left their home planet in the first place. In some ways they were ‘rebels’, and that would help colour Thelin's view of the galaxy. He spent most of his time among Pike City’s star port, watching the Gorn inter-act with the Humans and others who traded with the colony. Instead of watching the Human game of baseball, he eventually gravitated to volunteering at the main Hospital complex, in order to learn more about the Gorn and others. It was here he found his calling, and decided to stick with medical care.
As one of his clan mates had entered Starfleet Academy, Thelin decided he wanted to see more of the Federation faster, and enlisted instead. He qualified to become a medic, and underwent a year of training, which he did well in, having had prior experience in the field. It was during training that he had met a Bolian woman named Dena, whom he had grown attached to. It was a brief affair, and the two would never meet again…in a sense.
After graduation, Thelin was promoted and assigned to the Gettysburg. The older Excelsior-class was still a workhorse of the fleet, and the ship and crew found itself responding to many medical emergencies, to which the young Andorian proved his candor and coolness under pressure. However the real test came when the Gettysburg responded to an emergency deployment for an attack group…something unheard of in the 2360’s. Hastily engaging what was described only as a cybernetic life form, the Gettysburg was torn apart and left to drift in the first few minutes of the battle at Wolf 359. Thelin, having been in sickbay, woke to find most of the crew dead. With no way to enter engineering or the bridge, he did what he could do…headed towards a life pod, dragging his wounded CMO in the process. In some ways, he still feels like he performed an act of cowardice, and didn’t attempt to do more for the ship and others; he channels the blame fully on the borg though. In the aftermath, he had found a casualty list, and amongst the many dead was Dena.
It took several months of leave and recuperation but Thelin endured and was promoted again and assigned to the USS Jupiter. The Jupiter was a Nebula-class and was immediately assigned to patrol the outlying sectors nearest to the Delta quadrant…the area where the Borg cube had been traced coming from. On the first two year stint, Thelin found himself almost wishing to engage the borg again, but thankfully it never happened and the patrol happened with few incidents of note. Again he was promoted as a junior NCO and began his training as a full Nurse.
The second tour of the Jupiter was supposed to be a two year exploration assignment towards the Cardassian border, but beyond its reach. During this time the Marquis were in full swing however, and the Jupiter made several stops along the newly formed DMZ, helping to evacuate Federation colonies given to the Cardassians. During this time Thelin had treated a wounded Vulcan woman, who apparently was a Marquis, whilst they were planet side. For some reason the Andorian became rather fond of her, and was rather loathe to turn her over to the authorities. It was basic instinct versus his duty as a Starfleet NCO. Still feeling his in-action from not helping more of his crewmates at Wolf 359, he let her go, helping her to hide until the Jupiter left orbit. He never regretted his secret act, and to this day wonders what happened to her.
But life moved on, and death was soon to follow. Following his latest promotion, the Klingons had left the Khitomer Accords (for a time), and war was brewing due to a hidden enemy. In time they had a name...the Dominion. The Jupiter was assigned to the fleet gathering near the Bajor sector, and Thelin treated more wounds in several months then he had in his eight years of service. Due to the mounting casualties and crew shortages, Thelin was given a field warrant to Warrant Officer, and assisted the acting CMO firsthand. The war was mostly a blur to the Andorian, who trained and drilled more often than he slept. It was during the first battle of the Chin’toka system that things went really awry though.
The Jupiter had suffered major power loss, and was damaged enough to lose its warp drive and subspace communications relay. Narrowly, evading Dominion, Cardassian and Breen ships intent on securing the system, the acting Captain initiated a near-light speed impulse engine emergency ‘warp’. Thelin as the surviving senior medical officer, input his command codes to help with the safety over-rides and the Jupiter’s survivors headed away to the nearest star base, an over three month journey by their reckoning. However, going close to the speed of light warped time around them, and as they exited their journey, it was found to be 33 years from whence they had left.
Thelin found himself having to literally re-educate himself and get up to speed with current events and changes to the fleet. The Jupiter had been listed as MIA during the Dominion War, and Starfleet hadn’t expected the ship to re-appear. But what made it worse to the crew, was the fact they had come from one war and straight into another. Thelin found himself dumbstruck at having learned his home world was in Borg hands, and the Klingons were once again fighting the Federation…let alone not knowing what an Undine was.
For his own part though, Thelin’s warrant was made official and he was promoted and made an acting Medical Officer, following his advanced training. For now, he’s still coming to grips with the new reality of the 25th century, and hopes he can make a difference.
