A small hunk of elder obsidian sat on a small stand inside the test chamber. A beam of pale blue light shining into the unnaturally dark rock. The light seemed to be swallowed up by the darkness, Ezri stared with intense interest as the strange phenomenon. After a moment she turned and lifted her safety goggles as she walked over to her desk. Ezri picked up the recorder, "Chief Science Officer report, stardate 99077.81. I am conducting additional testing on the sample of elder obsidian that i was given by the Project Magellan people. The material has an incredible ability of absorb energy. The puzzle is that the material never seems to heat up. That is thermodynamically impossible...unless." Ezri paused, deep in thought. "...my hypothesis is that the material has multiphasic properties. The energy is perhaps shunted to other dimensions, which might explain its ability to absorb so much energy without heating up. This could also potentially provide a means of developing a weapon that effectively penetrates armor composed of such material.." Ezri pauses and take a long drink of Jumja cola before continuing, "I am going to try a number of energies and phase variances and catalog thier effectiveness against the material. I will relay the data back to alliance weapon designers so they can make use of it....end report."

Ezri yawned and downed the last of the Jumja cola in the bottle as she spoke into the recorder, "Chief Science officer, log...additional notes. Doctor T'Lena has strongly objected to my request to clone myself to create a reliable lab assistant. I am not sure what she has against clones...so anyway because of that I decide it would be best to create a holographic lab assistant. I have begun programming the holo-matrix. It should be ready for initial testing in a few days...end log."

Ezri sighed and she swept the popcorn kernels out of the test chamber. On her way over to the desk she dumped them in the waste recycler. She picked up the recorder and spoke, "Science Department staff memo...Once again the the high energy beam emitter is not to be used to make popcorn. It is for research only..."

Ensign Ernie Hauser stared at the back of the card Ezri was holding up for several seconds a nervous look on his face. After a moment he spoke in an uncertain voice, "um, a star?" he offered. Ezri looked at the card she was holding and shook her head slowly as she reached for the red button on the table. "wait! wait! wait! Please!" Ernie pleaded just before his body seized up from the electric shock. As Ernie recovered from the shock he glared at Ezri, "Do we have to do the electric shock thing?" He growled. "oh yeah, studies show that people are more likely to manifest ESP abilities under extreme stress." Ezri replied in a matter of fact sort of tone. Ezri picked up the recorder and spoke into it, "Science Officer Log, Stardate 99095.4, I am conducting an ESP survey of the crew, oddly enough I am finding people extremely hesitant to volunteer, even after a generous offer of free Jumja cola." Ezri pauses as her recording interrupted by Ensign Hauser. "..Gee I wonder why no one wants to take part in this? I mean who doesn't want to get tortured in thier off hours?" Hauser said an angrily as he put his jacket on. "its for science." Ezri explained. Hauser rolled his eyes and left. Ezri lceared her throat and continued with her recording, "Subject S345, otherwise known as Ensign Ernie Hauser has shown absolutely zero ESP potential. I need to see about recruiting other subjects. End Log" It was at that moment Lieutenant JG Francoise Helmkamp entered the lab and on hearing that immediately turned and walked back out. It was too late Ezri spotted her, "Wait Francoise, I need your help with an experiment." Helmkamp picked up her pace, she broke into a jog as she headed for the lift. "No. I'm busy." Helmkamp practically jumped into the lift car with Ezri close behind her. Francoise shoved Ezri back out as she tried to climb into the lift, "The car is full, wait for the next one." she said Ezri just stood there with a confused look on her face as she watched the doors close on the mostly empty lift car.

Ezri pulled the goggles down over her eyes and adjusted the beam of red energy she had aimed at the small chunk of unnaturally black rock. "Chief Science Officer's log, Stardate 99121.42. I have devised a mutiphasic imaging array that I hope will allow me to visualize the interior structure of the sample of Elder Obsidian. I am a little nervous because I have no idea what to expect here. I hope I don't let any ghosts out or something worse..but, its for science so I sort have to..End log."
Ezri activated the imager.

Place: Command deck timeship USS Protector -- Ship location unknown, outside the spacetime continuum. Time: unknown
Captain Ezri Tegan stood staring intently at the chaotic void beyond her ready room window, hands clasped behind her back. "Captain's log, Stardate 488042.37 our temporal observatory is tracking potentially disastrous time shock waves from the past. The fact that the source is likely multiple events is not making the task of isolating an origin any easier. The temporal energy signatures don't match any known Na'kuhl technology. So it is starting to look like there is another faction at work here. A preliminary analysis indicates the origin is likely somewhere in the early 25th century in the Large Magellanic Cloud this information makes this situation deeply concerning given critical events in that particular spacetime location. As soon as we have a target point resolved we will proceed to investigate. End Log."

"Chief Science officers log, Stardate 99336.75. After putting the final touches on my alternate universe 'window' technology I am finally ready for the initial testing. The device is calibrated to view what should be a random universe. However, considering that there should be another me in some universe out there who is likely also working on such technology it is highly likely that the two devices from both universes should lock onto one another and allow the two worlds to communicate both ways. End of Log..." Ezri set the recorder down and started typing into her console as she put the finishing touches on the code that ran the window device. After a short time, she pressed the sequence of buttons that powered the machine. As she did the lights in the lab dimmed momentarily. Ezri hoped that was not a ship-wide thing. The device hummed and the holographic display shimmered and sparkled. After a few moments, an image came into view. it was still a bit fuzzy about the edges, but it was clear enough to make out that she was staring at another version of herself. The uniform was different. In the alternate universe, Ezri had a strange emblem on her uniform that was unfamiliar to her other universe counterpart. "Who are you?" they both stated in unison. "I am Ezri Tegan" they again both stated in perfect unison. there was a short pause, "Can you prove that?" both asked simultaneously. "Stop saying everything I say!" both women barked at each other. Both women growled quietly in annoyance.

"Chief Science officer's log..." Ezri started her log, then there came a rather lengthy pause in which Ezri appeared ready to cry, "..just ordinary science officer log, stardate 99359.1. I really messed up this time. The Ezri from the other universe seemed so trustworthy. How was I supposed to know she was a weirdo? Anyway, the captain is really mad and now I am not the chief science officer anymore. Effective immediately Lieutenant JG Francoise Helmkamp is now the acting chief science officer and all my experiments are on hold pending a safety review. At least with the Artesia gateway down, they can't transfer me back to the Milky Way. But, I am sure they will find some other way to get rid of me. End log."

Ezri laid back in the chair the reclining lab chair. A rather clunky-looking makeshift apparatus sitting on top of her head. The Trill carefully reached over and activated the log recorder "Science officer's log, stardate 99776.39. I have fabricated an engrammatic interpreter which will allow me to encode and decode signals from the neural pathways of my brain. it is my intention to create a copy of my engrams to attach to a holographic matrix. This new hologram will serve as a lab assistant. coupled with my scientific genius and the raw computational power of modern computer technology, this new holographic scientist will make the perfect lab assistant. End Log..."
Ezri turned off the recorder and closed her eyes as she reached for the switch to activate the interpreter device. "Here goes nothing."

"Chief science Officer's log, stardate 100204.34. I floated some ideas to Commander Blaine on how to enhance ship security. I don't think I can stress how important this is now that we are headed back into Tanasauan space. But, given what he experienced in the camps I am sure he already understands. But, it is a valid concern about connecting the OctaVIA to our network and having it running full time. I was worried about how I would be able to keep the OctaVIA on mode over such a long time. Using another AI will not be as powerful, but in the event of a VIA intrusion it only needs to delay long enough to get the OctaVIA online. I think I can put a system in place that will be a lot more robust than that however. End log."
