Varel arrived at the holodeck at her allotted time, immediately inputting the parameters of the program into the console in front of the door. “Working...” the computer intoned to her. “Program initiated. You may enter when ready.” She glanced briefly down the hallway to see that Lieutenant Cameron had not yet arrived before she stepped inside. If he still intended to join her he could simply come in after, though after the recent events she did wonder if he would. Not everyone found the same tranquillity in a simulation of this nature.
She stepped into the lobby, finding a number of headsets assembled on a table before her and a myriad of different weapons on the wall behind it. Varel plucked one from the table and set it carefully over her head, a blue holographic interface coming to life before her eyes as she turned it on. The technology that had been developed to bring the game from the PADD to the holodeck was simply impressive. While the holodeck's job was to simulate the environment of each individual scenario being played, the eyepiece would allow one to connect to the servers on a subspace frequency and permit interactions with players on their own respective holodecks and holosuites. Naturally the end goal was to get to the point where the holoemitters themselves could simulate the movements and actions of opponents in real time instead of relying on the eyepiece, but for the time being it was perfectly adequate for a recreational program being developed by civilians. She adjusted the settings for a moment – being in another galaxy did tend to cause some lag, after all – and selected her weapons of choice for this game; a hand phaser and a sniper rifle, respectively, before she stepped up to the door that would take her from the lobby.
“Player: Logicalfallacy26, recognised. Please select scenario,” a woman's voice purred sensually at her. Varel raised a brow. Perhaps it had been recorded by a member of one of the feline races?
“Capture the flag. Teams of twenty or more. Additionally, distribute guest authorisation for anyone else who enters this program without an account.” Perhaps that would expedite the process for whoever came to join her.
“Working. Command received. Guest passes remaining: ten.” The doors then slid open, revealing a sprawling and empty wasteland that she immediately stepped out into. The terrain was rough, with hills and valleys that made the scenario that much more challenging. “You will be connected to the subspace network in approximately ten seconds. You cannot be defeated for points until an additional ten seconds have passed after you connect. Good luck.” Varel didn't need any more incentive than that. A countdown began in the upper right corner of her vision and she immediately went to the furthest side of the spawn zone, positioning herself to spring into action the instant that she connected.
3... 2... 1...
The world suddenly burst to life. In the distance she could see a two groups grappling with one another on opposite ends of a ravine, the fire from myriads of different weapon types flying freely through the air. Curiously, the Vulcan took the eyepiece in one hand and raised it just enough to see under the interface; there was still very much nothing going on in the actual holodeck. “Intriguing,” she murmured to herself as she drew her phaser and leapt down from the short platform, immediately taking off to her left. She'd played this map enough times on her PADD to know exactly where the best sniper nest was, and with a great view of her team's flag. Should anyone attempt to take it, she would be able to dispatch them with her usual efficiency should nothing provide a distraction.
