Xaelei and Solia were in Echo Lounge's kitchen chopping vegetables together as Solia was sharing her soup recipe and preparation instructions with her friend. Others in the lounge went about their business leaving the two friends with a degree of privacy.
Solia broke the silence, "So how long has Nathan been assigned strategic operations duties?"
"He just started."
Solia kept working, "I see. So the Captain has asked you to cross train him?"
"Yes"
Solia kept working, "I see. So is that what we saw on the bridge, his first cross training lesson?"
I gave Solia an unreadable look as we worked, "It was training."
Solia kept working, "I see. Is that why you were so demanding?"
"The risks are real. Do you think I am overly demanding?"
Solia stopped working and looked at me, "I would say that lesson was on par with the lessons instructed by the most uncompromising Vulcan taskmasters at the Science Academy."
"Really?"
Solia raised her eyebrow, "I have seen you instruct for years now and that display is not your instruction style. It was something different, like he was a threat or intruding."
"He needs to understand the full scope of what is involved and be ready for the responsibility."
Solia replied, "So if he does not meet your standards he is not suitable for the position?"
"Yes"
Solia countered, "It was his first training session."
"Your point?"
Solia replied, "Train and enable him. He will succeed or fail on his own. There is no need for you to drive him to fail."
I recognized Solia quoted me on purpose, "It is not that simple..."
"It is that simple.", Solia paused then continued, "I know how conflicted you are in your new role. I know how much of a risk you think people are taking putting you there and I know how hard you are on yourself.", Solia paused again, " The Captain sent an aspiring officer to get training in something from the very best, minus the...attitude."
After a long moment, I smiled and laughed aloud and asked, "Solia, did you just call me a bitch?"
