I was asked earlier today "How do you create transparent backrounds on images and save them?"
1.) First step is to use a graphics program like Photoshop and open the picture file you want to edit. then hit "Select all", then "copy", then "paste" as a new layer. Should be layer 1. click on the "Eye" icon next to the Background Layer in the layer toolbar.
2.) Click on the Magic Wand tool and set the Tolerance how ever you like depending on the complexity of the area you want to select with it. Higher number increases the pixel range that the wand will select when you use it. Make sure you have Layer 1 selected in the Layer Toolbar.
3.) Now, you can either select the part of the image you want to save, or you can select the part of the image you want to delete. I usually choose the one with the least pixel variations. Use the Wand on your choice. Make sure all pixels are selected that you want selected. Make sure that your selection lines are as close as you can get them to your logo or you will have white lines around it. Also don't forget the insides of letters or other openings that you want to be transparent as well.
4. a) If you chose the Part you want to save, hit copy and then hit paste as a new layer, Layer 2. On the Layer toolbar click on the "Eye" icon next to Layer 1. The part of the image you didnt want should now be transparent.
4. b) If you chose the part you want to get rid of... hit cut, delete, or clear. I think it's clear. the part of the inage you wanted to save should still be there but with a transparent background.
5.) Finally, save the file as a .GIF or .PNG. These file formats save the transparent layer.
Now, if the problem is that even though you save a file with a transparent background as a .gif or .png, it still shows up as white or black in the background when you view the file online. i dont know what went wrong. post and let me know how this works for you. Ill figure it out. ;D
<PICs illustrating these techniques coming soon.>

Hey guys, I wish I had been a member when the Fleet Uniform debates came up. Oh well Im posting my ideas for what the Starfleet Uniform would be like, just to get a feel for the fleet's feel of them. Im not asking that we adopt these as "Fleet Uniforms" I just want to know what you guys think. I used the Basic Starfleet Uniform showed on the cover of the Game Box and other examples in-game and out for my reasoning. We are 30 years from the last movie. Alot of time has passed. Historicaly, Starfleet updates there uniform forward, rather then backwards while keeping a certain style that easily says "starfleet". I feel the same should hold true on our ships as we strive to RP as accurately as possible. My first exposure to Starfleets future uniform (excluding the "Future" episode's Uniforms, as there is no equivalent in-game) was in the prequal comics that depicted the Romulan Nero before he and spock were thrust backwards in time. Captain Data of the Starship Enterprise - 2387 I personally really like this uniform, it keeps with the established style yet "moves forward". Next is the Uniform depicted on the Cover of the STO Box. This uniform is obviously not exactly like the Capt Data-2387 Uniform, but is an evolution from that. This Uniform is an example of the Default Uniform in STO w/ minor changes. There are numerous example of this type in-game on NPCs. Im not a fan of the cargo paints, combat boots or, armor and kits on uniforms. Its just not canon in my opinion. So, on my ship we dont display these things, even in battle. So, with an attempt to keep the feel of startrek in my gaming experience, i use these examples for my Ship Uniform. One of the main variations i use is the white collar/under shoulder on the Medical Uniform. All uniforms use their Division Badge and Gold Rank Bars. Let me know your thoughts. Do these have a canon feel to them? are they too bland with not enough color? are they too used and not distictive enough? that kind of thing. thanks guys ;D Post edit: And i know we use a varient of this as our dress uniform
