You should Expect skepticism with what we've been given in the recent past. At very least this sounds promising.

Great way of putting it! Yes this is what Trek is supposed to be! Took em long enough but oddly enough...very worth the wait!

Me thinks Simon Pegg has a little to do with it.

Indeed.
If I had /any/ complaint about the film -- and this is really picking at straws -- it would be that the action scenes felt a bit 'over the top'; namely that they featured simply too much in the action scenes than that was needed. But really, apart from that I enjoyed it quite a bit; even the snow globe. 8)

I finally saw Beyond today with a friend and I'll start with the good: this was an original story, not just another rehash. At the end, I thought it was a good Trek theme. They made much better use of the entire crew in this one than the last two. It was fun.
The bad, a lot of the fun stuff was fun because it was really kind of dumb, and it only worked because it was obvious they intended it to be dumb. A lot of the action stuff is shot with that annoying shakey cam format, and it made it incredibly hard to follow what was happening (mostly happened in the first half of the film). The villain was really interesting... but not until the latter half of the movie. In general, the action scenes failed to build any tension for me, and either succeeded through visual effects looking interesting or for being funny.
Overall, I had a good time during the character interaction parts, was mixed on the action bits, and enjoyed the movie's themes and antagonist once they brought them together. The non-action stuff on the planet and the entire Yorktown section were my favorite parts.
They need to stop blowing up the Enterprise, I couldn't bring myself to care during that section because it gets trashed every movie.

I just got back from seeing Beyond. I think everyone's made most of my points, but in a nutshell; thought it was fairly good, wish there had been more time spent delving deeper into the potential story they had there and less on action scenes, wtf why was the viewscreen glass instead of transparent aluminium. Overall, I would give it a B.
